Daimler investing more than ?1.5B at its main Mercedes-Benz powertrain plant in Germany in 2011 and 2012

Daimler is investing more than a combined ?1.5 billion (US$2 billion) in 2011 and 2012 in its main Mercedes-Benz powertrain plant in Stuttgart-Untert?rkheim for the extension and conversion of various parts of the plant and in the launch of new products and production technologies.

The investments??670 million in 2011 and more than ?980 million in 2012?will be allocated to extension and conversion measures and to new manufacturing technologies in the area of axle, transmission and engine production?for the new generation of compact cars, for example.

?270 million is earmarked at the Hedelfingen subplant for the ramp-up of the new dual clutch transmission, which is being deployed in the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The area of upstream operations, the foundry and forging works at the Mettingen subplant, is also being upgraded: the production of turbocharger housings by means of a specially developed casting process was started up this year at the former grey iron foundry on the back of investments in the order of ?65 million. Next year will also see the commissioning of a die-casting laboratory in which ?30 million has been invested. This lab will serve to simulate and optimize casting processes and to develop tool concepts.
