Seagate Backup Plus

In a world teeming with portable hard drive choices, Seagate's GoFlex line is noteworthy for its versatility and sprightly performance. As successor to the venerable GoFlex line, the newly-minted Backup Plus line represents Seagate's next wave of drives. But not all successors are successes, and the new Backup Plus (1TB) ($139.99 direct) has some big shoes to fill. How does it fare? As it turns out, quite well. With brisk performance, a smart user interface that uniquely incorporates social networking, and its versatile USM (Universal Storage Module) adapter, the Backup Plus is a fully realized product that ultimately outshines the GoFlex line and, accordingly, is the rightful heir of the Editors' Choice for portable hard drives, previously held by the Seagate GoFlex Turbo (750GB) ($169.99 list, 4.5 stars).

Design and Features
Measuring 0.5 by 3 by 4.75 inches (HWD) with the USM (a proprietary interface) adapter (and 0.5 by 3 by 4.4 inches without), the Backup Plus's compact chassis is complemented by its tasteful, low-key aesthetic. While our test unit was black, it also comes in silver, blue, and red. Constructed entirely out of plastic, its primary visual flourish is the brushed faux-metallic finish on the lid, with the Seagate logo on its lower right side. While I prefer the sturdiness of a metallic drive along the lines of, say, the Western Digital My Passport Studio (1TB) ($179.99 list, 4 stars), the Backup Plus is nonetheless a handsome drive that, at either 5.4 or 5.9 ounces (depending on whether the USM adapter is attached), can easily slip into a laptop bag without adding any noticeable heft.

The real draw is the USM adapter, which securely fastens to the rear of the drive in the same manner as the GoFlex line. As was the case with the GoFlex Turbo, the USM adapters are available for USB 3.0 (tested), FireWire, and Thunderbolt. While some may find fault with having to shell out the extra cash for additional adapters, it's nonetheless a cheaper option than purchasing a new drive altogether, not to mention the added convenience of using the same drive rather than transferring your data over another for the sake of employing a different connection method.

Once you plug the drive into a PC, you see a revamped version of Seagate's Dashboard program. The new Dashboard was clearly designed with simplicity in mind, as its clean interface presents three options: Protect, Share, and Save. The Protect category allows users perform a back-up manually or automatically, as well as create customized back-up plans. The Dashboard's true gem lies in the Save category, where files uploaded to a Facebook or Flickr account are either manually or automatically stored in a folder within the Backup Plus. Sure enough, after posting some test snapshots to my Facebook wall from my smartphone, they showed up in my Backup Plus. It's an innovative and simple method to store all your pictures or videos on a single location. The Dashboard's Share feature is somewhat less impressive, as it simply allows you to upload files from your Backup Plus directly to your Facebook account. While I typically appreciate the notion of skipping the Facebook interface to upload images, this function is not nearly as impressive as the Share feature.

The Backup Plus comes formatted for NTFS but can be reformatted for Macs. The only shortcoming in this regard is the "Protect" feature of the Dashboard, as it's not Mac-compatible. This isn't necessarily a fatal flaw since Mac users can perform the same task via Time Machine. Mac users can still utilize the rest of the Backup Plus's abundant set of features. In comparison, the Clickfree C6 Portable (1TB) ($150 street, 4 stars), is not compatible with Macs.

Performance
Although the drive we received from Seagate came equipped with USB 3.0, Seagate's USM adapters come in three flavors?FireWire, Thunderbolt, and USB 3.0. Using USB 3.0 (via the USM adapter's Micro B Port), the Backup Plus outpaced every portable drive in its class. It copied our 1.22GB test folder in a blazing 15 seconds, sprinting ahead of the Clickfree C6 (17 seconds) as well as the GoFlex Turbo (750GB) (18 seconds). Although a difference of a few seconds may initially seem negligible, the distinction becomes more pronounced when multiple large files are transferred. The Backup Plus's USB 3.0 speeds resoundingly trumped the WD My Passport Studio (1TB) using FireWire (31 seconds). Although USB 2.0 predictably yielded slower speeds for the Backup Plus (40 seconds), its USB 2.0 speed nonetheless surpassed that of the WD My Passport Studio (44 seconds) and the Clickfree C6 (41 seconds).

In the PCMark05 test, the Backup Plus yielded remarkable scores of 6,463 (via USB 3.0) and 3,125 (via USB 2.0), handily edging out the GoFlex Turbo's USB 3.0 score (6,025). The Backup Plus likewise yielded excellent results in the PCMark7 test, finishing with 1,449 (via USB 3.0) and 1,244 (via USB 2.0), easily edging out the Clickfree C6 Portable's scores of 1,406 (via USB 3.0) and 1,232 (via USB 2.0). The GoFlex Turbo's PCMark7 score of 1,498 with USB 3.0 was the lone instance in which the Backup Plus was outpaced, and since it was by a scant 49 points, it amounts to little more than a light drizzle on the Backup Plus's otherwise triumphant parade.

While the Seagate Backup Plus bears the imprimatur of the GoFlex line, its numerous attributes prevent it from standing in the lengthy shadow cast by its formidable GoFlex forebears. With its better user interface, faster performance, and innovative incorporation of social networking, the Backup Plus manages to outshine its predecessors, and sets the standard for future drives in the process, earning our Editors' Choice for portable hard drives.

CBS to put IT operation in Atlanta, create 100 jobs

ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE-- Media conglomerate CBS Corp. will open a technology center near Perimeter Mall that will provide IT support to the Fortune 500 company's properties.

The IT and software services operation would initially create more than 100 skilled jobs. CBS is expected to announce the project June 29.

The move will add to the "Tiffany Network's" presence in Atlanta. CBS (NYSE: CBS) owns three radio stations and has a television affiliate in Atlanta. The company also has a sales force that supports its outdoor advertising business.

The CBS IT expansion was code-named Project Thunder and later Project Lightning in economic development circles. Atlanta Business Chronicle first reported news of the project April 20.

CBS will put the IT operation in about 25,000 square feet at Peachtree Dunwoody Pavilion, a four-building office complex at 5775 Peachtree-Dunwoody Road N.E., sources said.

CBS had considered sites in Dunwoody and Midtown. The company is also said to have considered other cities, including Tampa, Fla., and Dallas.

CBS could receive economic incentives via Georgia's Regional Economic Business Assistance (REBA) program. The program is used to help "close the deal" when companies are considering Georgia and another state or country for their location or expansion.

REBA funds may be used to finance various needs of a company, including infrastructure, real estate acquisition, construction, or machinery and equipment.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court decided Friday not to consider reinstating the government's $550,000 fine on CBS for Janet Jackson's infamous breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl.

The high court refused to hear an appeal from the Federal Communications Commission over the penalty.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals twice had thrown out the fine. The second time came after the Supreme Court upheld the FCC's policy threatening fines against even one-time uses of curse words on live television.

The appeals court said FCC's policy of excusing fleeting instances of indecent words and images appeared to change without notice in March 2004, a month after Jackson's halftime act. The judges said that made the agency's action against CBS "arbitrary and capricious."

But now, the FCC clearly has abandoned its exception for fleeting expletives, Chief Justice John Roberts said.

"It is now clear that the brevity of an indecent broadcast ? be it word or image ? cannot immunize it from FCC censure," he said. "Any future 'wardrobe malfunctions' will not be protected on the ground relied on by the court below."

In addition, Roberts said that calling it a "wardrobe malfunction" when Justin Timberlake ripped away part of Jackson's bustier "strained the credulity of the public."

Q. Where can I find affordable health insurance? A. The Supreme ...

In the two years I've written this feature, hundreds of consumers have asked variations to that question. The answer has almost always been something like this: You're in tough shape now, but as of Jan. 1, 2014, when the Affordable Care Act fully kicks in, that will change. That's still the answer today. But tomorrow, after the Supreme Court rules on the law, who knows?

Here's a sample of the questions I got just this week:

? My boyfriend has double hernias in the groin area. He has no insurance. A local hospital said it would cost him $10,000 to get them operated on through their charity program. It's $17,000 regular price. Is there any other insurance that would be less?

? My friend was out of work and could not afford health insurance. While in an auto repair shop picking up his vehicle, he was hit by an employee backing up a four-wheeler with a small trailer and broke his leg in seven places. The hospital bill is $34,000 and they will not budge on giving any discounts. Any idea how to deal with them?

? I will be retiring soon at 58. While I can continue our health insurance through COBRA, it is expensive. I have applied for insurance with two providers, but was rejected by both for pre-existing conditions. Where can we find less expensive health insurance?

? We currently pay $2,200 a month for insurance, plus copays. When applying for private insurance we were denied because of heart and arthritis conditions. Is there someplace we can get reasonable insurance?

Under Obamacare, all four of those consumers would soon be eligible for insurance they could afford. But the Supreme Court justices could toss out all or part of the law, or leave it untouched.

Our health-care team will start analyzing the ruling the minute it comes out, and I'll report our conclusions here as soon as I can.

In the meanwhile, here's a refresher on what, exactly, is at stake for consumers like the long-suffering people who sent in those questions.

Got a question for me? Ask it here.

A raging wildfire roared through neighborhoods and forced 32,000 residents of Colorado Springs to flee their homes.

The 24-square mile fire scorched the edges of the U.S. Air Force Academy on Wednesday. Thick smoke and towering flames cloaked the full scope of damage to Colorado's second-largest city.

President Barack Obama plans to tour the area on Friday.

A separate fire burning in northern Colorado has grown to 136-square miles and destroyed 257 homes.

Elsewhere in the West, wildfires in central Utah and Billings, Mont., have each destroyed dozens of homes and forced hundreds of evacuations. Another wildfire in Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest has charred about 19 square miles as of Wednesday.

Verizon Data Widget

Just a quick heads up to you Verizon peeps -- who by now should have seen this -- that Big Red apparently is discontinuing its "My Verizon Data Widget." That's the handy little tool that would show your data usage right on your homescreen, without having to navigate VZW's website to find the same info. It was a handy little bugger, especially in a day and age when unlimited data's going the way of the dinosaurs.

We also can't  help but wonder if Thursday's launch of Verizon's "Share Everything" shared data plans has anything to do with this? Hopefully we'll see an update widget soon. Verizon (and all the carriers) needs to make seeing where you're money's going as transparent as possible.

Update: And just as we suspected, this widget's being deprecated so that Verizon can roll out a new one for its new shared data plans. Thanks, Brandan!

Thanks, Adam and Broken007!

(AP) ? Shares of Pfizer Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. fell Monday after federal regulators unexpectedly delayed for a second time a decision on whether to approve the companies' highly touted experimental anticlotting drug Eliquis.

Some analysts see Eliquis as better than two new clot-preventing pills that beat it to market, but the latest delay means a U.S. launch of Eliquis likely won't happen until next year.

The Food and Drug Administration said it wants more information on "data management and verification" from a huge international study called ARISTOTLE that examined how well Eliquis prevented strokes in patients with an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation, the drugmakers said Monday.

The companies said the FDA did not ask for new studies, and they plan to work quickly to address outstanding questions. Even so, a spokeswoman for New York-based Bristol-Myers said the agency could take up to six months to review their response.

"We are already working with the agency, and we are hopeful that the review of our submission can be completed within a shorter timeframe," said spokeswoman Laura Hortas.

Analyst Erik Gordon, a professor at University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, said the FDA requiring more information on data management and verification indicates "someone either flubbed the application by not making the data management process clear or flubbed the actual data process."

"It's a giant botch-up to, at best, lose a year on one of your much-needed blockbusters," Gordon added.

In afternoon trading, Bristol-Myers shares dropped $1.17, or 3.3 percent, at $34.19, and Pfizer shares fell 23 cents to $22.49 per share.

The news has a bigger impact on Bristol-Myers, because it is much smaller than Pfizer, the world's biggest drugmaker. Also, the FDA in January delayed a decision on another crucial experimental drug from Bristol, diabetes treatment Forxiga, known chemically as dapagliflozin. The agency said it needed more data, including data from an ongoing study and possibly new studies, to assess Forxiga's benefits and risks.

Eliquis, known chemically as apixaban, is one of a handful of new drugs meant to prevent heart attacks and strokes better than warfarin ? long the standard treatment despite how tricky it is to use. Eliquis, Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH's Pradaxa and Xarelto from Johnson & Johnson and Bayer HealthCare all are expected to grow into much-needed blockbusters for their makers, with annual sales topping $1 billion.

"All of this is surprising given the widespread perception that Eliquis is a best-in-class product relative to already-approved" Pradaxa and Xarelto, BernsteinResearch analyst Dr. Tim Anderson wrote of the new delay.

It could benefit Xarelto and Pradaxa, and possibly a fourth stroke-preventing pill in late-stage testing by Daiichi Sankyo, called edoxaban, Barclays analyst C. Anthony Butler wrote to investors.

"The longer time window is significant in a market that appears to be less open to switches (from warfarin) than previously assumed," Butler wrote.

He added that if Bristol-Myers and Pfizer give the FDA the new information by September, the agency could make a decision next March. That would be a year after the FDA's original target date for a decision on Eliquis. At the end of March, the FDA pushed back its original deadline until June 28, saying it needed more time to review additional information the companies submitted after applying for approval late last year.

Both men noted analysts may revise their sales forecasts for Eliquis, which Anderson had pegged at $2.3 billion in 2015 and $3.5 billion in 2020.

Doctors and millions of patients have long wanted a better alternative to warfarin, an inexpensive generic drug also sold under brand names such as Coumadin. Getting the dose of warfarin correct is so tricky that patients must have frequent blood tests to ensure they're getting enough to prevent clots but not enough to cause internal bleeding. Some foods interact with warfarin, compounding the difficulty.

Bristol-Myers discovered Eliquis and since 2007 has been testing it in partnership with New York-based Pfizer. The European Union approved it in May for preventing blood clots in patients getting hip or knee replacement surgery, and the companies are considering whether to seek approval for that use in the U.S., Hortas said. The drug also is in late-stage testing for treating patients with clots in major blood vessels.

Pradaxa, also known as dabigatran, was first to market, getting approved in October 2010 for patients with atrial fibrillation. Xarelto has since been approved for patients with atrial fibrillation and for preventing blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery. But J&J said last week the FDA denied its request to expand approval of Xarelto to prevent life-threatening blood clots in patients with acute coronary artery disease, and it expects to work with them to address the questions as quickly as possible.

Ames Laboratory part of team that found magnetism may be responsible for superconductivity in iron-based superconductors

AMES, Iowa -- In traditional electrical lines, a significant amount of energy is lost while the energy travels from its source to homes and businesses due to resistance. Superconductors, materials that when cooled have zero electric resistance, have the promise of someday increasing the efficiency of power distribution, but more must still be learned about superconductors before they can be widely used for that purpose.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory are using specialized techniques to help unravel the mysteries of a new type superconductor that was discovered in 2008. Ames Lab physicists were part of an international collaboration that also included scientists at Kyoto University in Japan, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Bristol in the United Kingdom to study the materials.

The group found that magnetism may be helping or even responsible for superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. The results were published in the June 22 issue of Science.

"The first step in designing superconductors for new technologies that will help save energy is better understanding of how superconductors work," says Ruslan Prozorov, who led the team at Ames Lab that also included Kiyul Cho and Makariy Tanatar.

Unfortunately, most conventional measurements of material parameters, such as resistivity, aren't useful in the state of superconductivity. But Prozorov several years ago helped developed a technique to measure how far the magnetic field penetrates into a superconductor. This length is called the London penetration depth, and it reveals basic information about a material, even in the superconducting state.

"London penetration depth is one of the few quantities we can measure in a superconducting state to learn more about what's going on, so the technique we specialize in here at Ames Laboratory was particularly useful for this research project," said Prozorov, who is also an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Iowa State University. "In this collaboration, we studied a barium-iron-arsenic-phosphorus material at near zero Kelvin, and our London penetration depth measurements suggested that magnetism is responsible for superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Typically, magnetism is detrimental to superconductivity, but when it is weakened enough, it might actually be helping."

The international team's research helps answer one of the central questions about how iron-based superconductors work.

"Iron-based superconductors may open the door to new energy technologies," said Prozorov. "But we'll only get there through materials science and understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in these new iron-based materials."

Exercise, even mild physical activity, may reduce breast cancer risk

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? A new analysis has found that physical activity -- either mild or intense and before or after menopause -- may reduce breast cancer risk, but substantial weight gain may negate these benefits. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings indicate that women can reduce their breast cancer risk by exercising and maintaining their weight.

While studies have shown that physical activity reduces breast cancer risk, many questions remain. For example, how often, how long, and how intense does physical activity have to be to provide benefits? Also, do women with all body types experience a reduced risk when they exercise, and does exercise reduce the risk of all types of breast cancer?

To investigate, Lauren McCullough, of the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill, and her colleagues looked for a link between recreational physical activity, done at different time points in life, and the risk of developing breast cancer.

The study included 1,504 women with breast cancer (233 noninvasive and 1,271 invasive) and 1,555 women without breast cancer who were 20 to 98 years old and were part of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, an investigation of possible environmental causes of breast cancer.

Women who exercised either during their reproductive or postmenopausal years had a reduced risk of developing breast cancer. Women who exercised 10 to 19 hours per week experienced the greatest benefit with an approximate 30% reduced risk. Risk reductions were observed at all levels of intensity, and exercise seemed to preferentially reduce the risk of hormone receptor positive breast cancer (ER or PR positive), which is the most commonly diagnosed tumor type among American women.

"The observation of a reduced risk of breast cancer for women who engaged in exercise after menopause is particularly encouraging given the late age of onset for breast cancer," said McCullough.

When the researchers looked at the joint effects of physical activity, weight gain, and body size, they found that even active women who gained a significant amount of weight -- particularly after menopause -- had an increased risk of developing breast cancer, indicating that weight gain can eliminate the beneficial effects of exercise on breast cancer risk.
