Indoor Competitions. Not Just for Super Heroes | Rock Climbing UK

Mick Radford at The Depot

Ever seen the adverts for your local walls bouldering competition?

My regular venue, The Climbing Depot has just finished it?s summer bouldering league. The basics were 30 problems from very easy (V0) to very hard (V11) with one month to complete as many as you can in the least number of goes, the quicker you do it the more points you get.

It?s often thought only the best climbers can enter competitions, but its not the case, they are just as much fun for climbers at any stage of their climbing life from beginner to WAD.

I found it great fun having some friendly rivalry with my climbing pals, seeing who could get the best score, sand bagging them with some dodgy beta or heckling to put them off as they?re struggling for that final hold. ?But as a by product spent more effort trying to on-sight the problem.

Automatically I started looking for sequences or foot chips that would give me the edge before I even pulled on the problem.? All the things you?ve read about and think you do, but actually most of the time don?t. (or maybe that?s just me.?)

The result is my on-sight grade has risen a notch or too and I?ve adopted the same strategy to outdoor problems, resulting in sends coming quicker.

In short, don?t be put off having a go at these competitions, they?re great fun and improve your climbing at the same time. Plus who doesn?t like getting one up on your climbing buddy. ?:D
