Buying a pickup is one of the smartest purchases you can make for a number of reasons. Not only is it just about the best, most functional, and most versatile type of vehicle on the road today, but according to the experts at Insure.com, it's one of the most inexpensive vehicles to insure as well.

In their most recent survey where they've selected the top 20 least and most expensive models to insure for 2012, six pickup trucks made the "good" list. Basically, Insure.com commissioned a third part to generate a report of the average auto insurance rates, using data from the six largest carriers (Allstate, Farmers, GIECO, Nationwide, Progressive, and State Farm) in 10 Zip codes per state.?

(Averages are based on insurance for a single 40-year-old male who commutes 12 miles to work each day, with policy limits of 100/300/50 ($100,000 for injury liability for one person, $300,000 for all injuries and $50,000 for property damage in an accident) and a $500 deductible on collision and comprehensive coverage. This hypothetical driver has a clean record and good credit. The rate includes uninsured motorist coverage.?Average rates are for comparative purposes. Your own rate will depend on personal factors.)

The top pickup trucks that made Insure.com's Least Expensive to Insure list are:

#5 -- GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab 4x2 4.3L V-6 at $1,121

#6 -- Chevy Silverado 1500 Regular Cab 4x2 4.3L V-6 at $1,126

#10 -- Chevy Silverado 1500 Ext Cab 4x2 4.3L V-6 at $1,143

#16 -- Nissan Frontier S King Cab 4x2 2.5L I-4 at $1,162

#17 -- Nissan Frontier SV King Cab 4x2 2.5L I-4 at $1,163

#20 -- GMC Canyon WT Regular Cab 4x2 2.9L I-4 at $1,167

No pickup trucks showed up on the Most Expensive Vehicles to Insure list. As you might expect, that Top 20 of that list is littered with high-horsepower, big-motored, sports cars from Europe (although there is one import V-6 from Japan; can you guess?). French silent film takes home three major prizes, for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.

The early word on the 84th annual Academy Awards was that silent movie "The Artist" was going to run the board. Then there were five early wins by Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" in technical awards, and it seemed as if it would be a night of upsets.

But, like an old movie serial that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end, the throwback to another era in film came on strong and swept three of the four biggies: Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.

The wins capped a night of celebrating the history of cinema, with the final act providing a perfect topper, as "The Artist" became only the second silent movie in Oscar history to snag the night's top prize and the first black-and-white one to win Best Picture since "Schindler's List" in 1994. Joining it in the winner's circle with five wins was another loving tribute to the wonder of film, Scorsese's "Hugo."

After the crash-and-burn that was last year's younger-demo-seeking combo of James Franco and Anne Hathaway, nine-time emcee Billy Crystal provided some of that same kind of warm-and-fuzzy feeling to his hosting duties as well. After the tumult that resulted in Eddie Murphy dropping out of the gig in November, the veteran comedian did exactly what everyone wanted him to: he sang, he danced, he made bar mitzvah and Hitler jokes, he spoofed the year's biggest movies and took a lifetime's worth of shots at Kodak.

Michel Hazanavicius bested Scorsese for Best Director for his work on "The Artist." Though he claimed to have forgotten his speech, Hazanavicius proclaimed himself the "happiest director in the world" for taking home such a prestigious honor for his anachronistic feature about the culture clash between the old and new when talkies supplanted silent films in the late 1920s.

In addition to shouting out the film's famous pooch, Uggie, Hazanavicius gave props to the movie itself, saying, "Since this movie has been made, its life is full of grace and it brings to us joy and happiness. Sometimes life is wonderful, and today is one of these days."

He was joined a short time later by his leading man, Jean Dujardin, who beat out the likes of three-time Best Actor nominee George Clooney, his bromantic pal Brad Pitt and fellow first-time nominees Gary Oldman and Demian Bichir for Best Actor. For a guy who spent an entire movie not talking, Dujardin had a simple message for his legion of new American fans: "I love your country!"

The most nominated actor in Oscar history waited an interminable 30 years between awards, but the 17th time was the charm for Meryl Streep, who snagged her third golden man for disappearing into the role of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady." The always entertaining actress moaned, "Oh my God, oh come on!" at the standing ovation, saying she feared that when her name was read, half of America groaned, "Oh no! Her! Again!"

The night's first Oscar, for Cinematography, suggested that perhaps "The Artist" would not run the board, as it went to Scorsese's "Hugo." As did the second, for Art Direction, which went to the husband-and-wife team that made "Hugo" such a rich visual feast for the eyes. Along the way, the movie also picked up the Oscars for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

Best Supporting Actress went to first-time nominee Octavia Spencer for her role in "The Help," which garnered a standing ovation from the crowd as she struggled to overcome tears in accepting the award for her work as headstrong maid Minny Jackson.

The big night for "The Artist" began with a win for Original Score for untrained composer Ludovic Bource, but it was the cymbal-crashing entrance by Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis that helped make the two-song race in the Best Original Song category a memorable one. "Flight of the Concords" star Bret McKenzie won the marathon for "Man or Muppet," noting that it was his lifelong dream to meet Kermit the Frog and, like many leading men in Hollywood, he noted that the fuzzy Muppet is "a lot shorter in real life."

After seven decades in the business, a lithe Christopher Plummer became the oldest actor to ever win an Oscar when he accepted the Supporting Actor statue for his work as a father who comes out to his son after the death of his wife in "Beginners." Holding up the golden statue, Plummer said, "You're only two years older than me — where have you been all my life?" joking that he emerged from the womb practicing his thank-you speech.

Though it wasn't in the running for the biggies, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" didn't go home empty-handed, as it snagged the Best Editing prize for the same duo who took it home last year for "The Social Network." The award for Animated Feature went to director Gore Verbinski, who took home his first Oscar for "Rango."

Director Alexander Payne took home his second Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his collaboration on the script to "The Descendants," while a typically absent Woody Allen will get his Original Screenplay statue in the mail for "Midnight in Paris."

Mashable - Samsung Announces Two Galaxy Tab 2 Tablets - Featured in Social Media

BARCELONA: Samsung is expanding its Galaxy Tab tablet line with the brand new Galaxy Tab 2 lineup: a 7.0-inch variant and a 10.1-inch variant.

While the smaller tablet was announced a week ago, its big brother, the 10.1 is entirely new. It sports an 1280?800 resolution screen (the 7-inch model has a 1024?600 pixel screen), and the rest of the specs between the two tablets are nearly identical: a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 3-megapixel camera on the back and a VGA one on the front.

The tablets are available as 3G models (meaning HSPA) or as WiFi-only, and they?re both equipped with the latest flavor of Android ? 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich.

The devices should hit the global market in March, starting with the UK, at a yet-unspecified price.

Samsung is also announcing a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. It?s a big tablet with a stylus.

Secondhand Smoke Harms Our Pets Too | Central Florida Online

In the past 45 years, the number of smokers in the United States has decreased to less than 20% of the population and almost 70% of those current smokers want to kick the habit. Could an understanding of how secondhand smoke affects our pets help encourage more people to quit?

The history of smoking tobacco may reach back many hundreds of years, but research in the 20th century has made it clear how harmful this habit is. Furthermore, secondhand smoke has been implicated in the illnesses and even deaths of non-smokers. What?s even more disturbing is that smokers may have unknowingly contributed to severe disease in dogs and cats.

Most people understand that secondhand smoke from cigarettes contains an incredible number of hazardous substances and many of them are carcinogenic. These chemicals are found in high concentrations in carpets and on furniture around the home. This includes pets sharing this environment! These toxins get on their fur and they ingest them during normal grooming.

In the early 1990s, researchers found correlations between nasal cancers in dogs and the presence of smokers in the home. There is also a concern that environmental tobacco smoke may increase the incidence of lung cancer in our canine friends as well.

Cats may actually be at higher risk for serious disease when they live in a smoking environment. As mentioned above, many cigarette smoke toxins settle to low levels in the home and cats will pick up these substances on their fur. Because of their fastidious grooming habits, cats end up ingesting a higher level of chemicals and this leads to a greater chance of several types of cancer.

Lymphoma is a cancer of white blood cells and is one of the most common cancers seen in our pet cats. When smokers are present in the cat?s household, the risk for this killer is increased by two or three times over cats living in non-smoking homes. Sadly, when our feline friends are diagnosed with lymphoma, the prognosis is very poor and many won?t survive another six months.

Another serious cancer with links to secondhand smoke is a cancer of the mouth known as squamous cell carcinoma, or SCC. Studies have linked a higher risk for SCC in cats living in smoking homes. Again, the prognosis is very grave and most pets won?t survive another year.

An unpublished study has also found that the levels of nicotine found in the hair of dogs exposed to second hand smoke is similar to levels found in children living with parents who smoke.

With more than 46 million smokers in North America and about 60% of the population owning dogs or cats, the risk for the animals is substantial. Pets are often good at hiding signs of illness, so many smoking owners fail to realize the damage that their habit is causing to the four legged family member.

Of course, the best course of action is to give up the tobacco habit entirely. It?s not only best for the health of the smoker, it will also greatly reduce risks for pets. Understanding that it?s not easy to quit this addictive habit, people who smoke and have pets should attempt to minimize their pets? exposure by smoking outdoors. If you must smoke when you drive, leave your pets and kids at home!

Pets who are developing illnesses from secondhand smoke may exhibit symptoms ranging from lethargy to coughing to the appearance of masses in the mouth. It?s important to have your pet seen by a veterinarian if any of these signs are noted.

Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB)

The Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ puts government-grade security onto a flash drive for the masses, with 256-bit AES hardware-based encryption for an extremely reasonable price ($14 street for 8GB). Also available in capacities of 4GB ($12 street), 16GB ($26 street) and 32GB ($65 street), the drive offers strong encryption for personal and business use that is no more inconvenient than entering a password.

Design
The Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) features a capless swivel design, with a metal cover that slides into place to protect the USB 2.0 connector from dirt and pocket lint without the hassle of an easily misplaced cap. The body of the drive is made of black plastic, while the swiveling aluminum cover is a dark metallic grey. A glowing blue LED light lets you know when the drive is plugged in and working. Measuring 0.5 by 4.2 by 5.5 inches (HWD), the drive is no larger than a pack of Wrigley's gum and weighs a mere 1.3 ounces. It's thin enough that it won't block any adjacent USB ports, and an included lanyard loop makes it easy to add the drive to your key ring.

The 8GB capacity isn't over-spacious when compared to 32GB and 64GB drives, but 8GB is more than enough space for scads of documents and images. It's also decently priced at $14, or roughly $1.75 per gigabyte. The various capacities come in at varying dollar-per-GB values, some being better bargains than others. The 4GB model is $3 per GB, while the 16GB is $1.63 and the 32GB is $2.03. For comparison, the 4GB Aegis Secure Key ($65 direct, 4.5 stars) sells for $65, or $16.25 per GB. If you're looking for an encrypted storage solution with higher capacities, such as to secure video or music files, you may want to look at an encrypted portable hard drive.

Features and Performance
The DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) uses two-zone encryption, letting you set up public and encrypted portions on the drive?allowing hassle-free file access while still protecting your most sensitive data. The whole setup process takes less than a minute, but provides strong protection from unauthorized access, with 256-bit AES encryption and intrusion protection which automatically reformats the drive after 10 invalid password attempts. The password setup is quick, simple, and designed to produce a strong password (between six and 16 characters containing upper- and lowercase letters and at least one number and one special character).

The DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) works with both Windows (Windows 7, Vista, and XP) and Mac OS X (10.5 to current) with no need to reformat the drive, but Linux users are out of luck. Kingston backs the DataTraveler Locker+ with a five-year warranty and offers free 24/7 tech support.

In testing, the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) had data transfer rates of 24MB/sec (read) and 9.6MB/sec (write)?faster than the 10MB/sec (read) and 5MB/sec (write) that Kingston claims. Though it won't match the speeds of the USB 3.0-equipped Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 (32GB), it compares quite well against other USB 2.0 drives, like the similarly styled Imation Swivel Flash Drive (4GB) and Victorinox Swiss Army Slim Flight 4GB.

In our PCMark 7 storage performance test, the DataTraveler Locker+ scored 623 points, within a few points of the Victorinox Swiss Army Slim Flight (631 points) and well ahead of the Corsair Flash Voyager (335 points)?even though the last has a potentially much faster USB 3.0 connection.

The Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) gives you secure digital storage for your personal and financial documents in an affordable, uncomplicated package. The DataTraveler Locker+ is priced significantly below other professional-grade secure drives and provides pretty good performance to boot. Once the crowds and competition are gone for athletes there's only a few ways to stay in the game. If you're not coaching then the other option is broadcasting. As organized MMA reaches its 20-year mark, more and more fighters are beginning the transition into the media.

Plant toughness: Key to cracking biofuels?

ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2012) ? Along with photosynthesis, the plant cell wall is one of the features that most set plants apart from animals. A structural molecule called cellulose is necessary for the manufacture of these walls. Cellulose is synthesized in a semi-crystalline state that is essential for its function in the cell wall function, but the mechanisms controlling its crystallinity are poorly understood. New research from a team including current and former Carnegie scientists David Ehrhardt (Carnegie), Ryan Gutierrez (Carnegie), Chris Somerville (U.C. Berkeley), Seth Debolt (U. Kentucky), Dario Bonetta (U. Ontario) and Jose Estevez (U. de Buenos Aires) reveals key information about this process, as well as a means to reduce cellulose crystallinity, which is a key stumbling block in biofuels development.

Their work is published online by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for the week of February 20-24.

A plant's cell wall serves several essential functions including mechanical support: Allowing the plant to withstand the onslaughts of wind and weather, and permitting it to grow to great heights-- hundreds of feet for trees like the giant Redwood--and providing an essential barrier against invading pathogens. The cell wall is also the source of materials that have long been utilized by humans, including wood and cotton, in addition to serving as a potential source of biofuel energy.

Cellulose is the primary constituent of the cell wall and as such is the most abundant biopolymer on the planet. It is also the key molecule providing the cell wall its essential mechanical properties. To address the question of its manufacture in plant cells, the research team, led by Seth DeBolt of the University of Kentucky, focused on different aspects of cellulose-synthesizing complexes.

Working in conjunction with Chris Somerville, Ehrhardt developed a method for observing this complex by tagging it with a fluorescent marker derived from jellyfish and imaging the tagged protein using a technique called spinning disk confocal microscopy. This technique allows individual biosynthetic complexes to be seen and studied in living cells, producing an unusually high level of resolution.

Dario Bonetta of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Debolt, Somerville and Ehrhardt all participated in screening a large number of small molecules to determine which ones interfere with cell wall building. Those that interfered were then examined at the cellular level -- using the fluorescent marker -- in order to see how they affect the cellulose-synthetic complexes.

Once interesting candidates were identified, a search was undertaken to look for mutant plants that showed reduced responses to these molecules. It was assumed that, because these plants were either unaffected or differently affected by these molecules, then they would have plant cell walls that are compromised or in some way unusual.

Using this process of elimination, two mutations, called CESA1 and CESA3, were found in the genes that encode certain cellulose synthase proteins and these mutated genes were further studied. Both of these mutations are predicted to be found in the part of these proteins that cross the plant cell's membrane, which forms just inside the cell wall.

Other members of the team analyzed the cellulose manufactured by plant cells that had these mutations and found defects in the structure of cellulose that these altered proteins produced. Normally, the individual sugar chains that make up cellulose bond to each other to make a semi-crystalline fiber. This crystalline structure gives cellulose its essential mechanical properties, such as rigidity and tensile strength. This structure is also is responsible for cellulose's resistance to digestion, which provides a key barrier to utilizing cellulose as a source to produce liquid fuel.

The mutant CESAs, 1 and 3, produced cellulose with lower crystallinity. This cellulose was also more easily digested, a process that is needed to liberate sugars from cellulose so they can be converted to useful fuels. "The team made a connection between the structure of the proteins that produce cellulose, and the structure of their product," Ehrhardt said. "This is a first step in understanding how this important property of cellulose may be regulated, opening possibilities for development of useful biomaterials and for cellulosic biofuel crops."

Family day is perhaps my favorite long weekend of the year because Spring is just around the corner. Anne was sleeping through most of it. I was on the computer from the time I got up at around 12:30pm until now.

Other then having the day off the only highlight of the day was watching Monday night Raw.

I'm having some trouble getting into the flow of this book "Stardoc" not that the narrative isn't good or the premise sucks, it's just making time to settle down to read it. Seems it's going to be one of those commute reads. I might have it read by the end of March the way I'm going.
Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's historic flight into space. I was 9 years old when that happened. I remember watching the event as a kid but it never made an impression on me at the time. It showed the capsule with people nearby it and I can't believe how small it looks. There are more electronics in today's cars then there were in the Glenn's vehicle. The Apollo space program ended up costing $25B while the Space Shuttle Program ended up costing about $450B over the course of its lifespan. The Orion space program seems to be a step backward rather then forward but is slated to begin it's first orbital launch in 2014. I'll be dead and gone by the time humanity first steps foot on Mars.
