Caecilians belong to the same group of animals that includes frogs and salamanders. But unlike other amphibians, caecilians lack legs. Some caecilians are as short as a pencil, while others grow as long as a child. Their eyes are tiny and hidden beneath skin and sometimes bone. And they have a pair of tentacles on their face that can sniff out chemicals in the environment.

?The whole creature is really quite bizarre,? says Emma Sherratt, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University.

Thumb how to care for orchids Not Green? Try These Gardening Ideas!

Gardening can be an essential part of beautifying your home or supplementing you, your family, or your career. However, understanding it and buying the right gardening equipment can be tricky. Here are some tips that you can use to help you properly and successfully grow a garden like a pro.

Repel leaf-eating insects with chili pepper. If your plants? foliage is being ravaged by hungry insects, add one tablespoon of red chili pepper or hot mustard to one quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray the foliage evenly, making sure to get the undersides of the leaves too. One taste of this spicy spray will send bugs on their way.

If you like to plant flowers that produce a lot of fragrance, consider planting them close to your house. One reason is that you can enjoy the scent whether you are inside or outside your house. Another reason is that the heat from the walls of your house can intensify the scent from your flowers, making them more fragrant.

Use mulch around your plants to help retain moisture and prevent the growth of weeds. You can buy mulch, but you can create your own by using grass clippings or leaves. You can even lay down plastic sheeting and plant your plants in holes in the plastic. All these methods help the plants retain the moisture they need for growth and reduce the chances that weeds will grow.

A garden that has tall plants in the back with low-growing plants in the front shows off the entire flower bed the best. To keep interest and color in your garden throughout the season, be sure to plant flowers that come into bloom at different times. This way, you will always enjoy color in your garden.

Create a deep flower border. orchid care Most people think the standard flower border should be about three or four deep, but a showy border needs to be at least six or eight feet. This will give you enough space to plant small ornamental trees and large flowering shrubs, along with the usual annuals and perennials.

Wear comfortable shoes and clothing when gardening. Never work in the garden in bare feet or sandals. Wear shoes that lace up and give good cushioning and arch support. If it is hot and sunny out, wear a hat to shade from the sun and clothes that will protect the skin from burning. The more comfortable you are, the more you will enjoy your garden.

Try growing crops that are easy to store or store themselves. If handled properly and gently, given the right amount of time to cure, garlic, onions, sweet potatoes, squash, dry beans, or shallots will keep for a very long time in a cool, dry place. No canning or freezing required. This will ensure having fresh vegetables from the garden all winter long.

A great tip to consider when gardening is to use gloves as often as possible. While this might hinder your dexterity, it is a great way to keep your hands clean and also lessen the risk of injury from sharp tools, stones, bug bites, thorns, and other dangers that lurk in your garden.

Spades and hoes should be periodically caring for orchids sharpened to keep them working at their best. If you have the space, choose tools such as long handled spades that allow you to stand while working. The better you feel after gardening, the more often you?ll enjoy getting your hands dirty!

Slide your fingernails against a bar of soap to prevent dirt from getting under your nails. The dirt doesn?t necessarily hurt you, but you will save time and effort when cleaning your hands later. Instead of having to dig underneath your nails, you can just use a nailbrush to quickly remove the soap residue.

Mow your lawn correctly. Reduce the height of long grass in several stages rather than at one time, as this prevents the lawn going brown. Let long grass dry completely, or it will look ragged after mowing. Mow hard-wearing lawns when the grass reaches 2.5 inches, and fine lawns when the grass reaches 1 to 2 inches. In late spring, when growing conditions are good, you may have to mow your lawn twice a week, whereas in late fall every 2 weeks is sufficient. Use grass clippings as mulch under mature trees and shrubs, or add them to the compost pile.

Make sure your plants are always evenly spaced by turning your rake or shovel handle in to a measuring stick. Simply lay a yardstick next to your shovel and copy the markings to the handle with a permanent marker. The next time you?re ready to put in new plants all you?ll need is your shovel.

1.3 million veterans lack health coverage

More than 1.3 million working-age veterans don?t have health insurance and are failing to take advantage of health care available through Veterans Affairs, a new study finds.

Researchers at the Urban Institute used census data to estimate health insurance coverage for veterans aged 19 to 64.

While veterans are more likely to have health insurance than the general population, about 1 in 10 of the nearly 12.5 million veterans under age 65 do not have health coverage either through the VA or other insurers.

The rates of uninsurance appear to be especially high for veterans under age?35.

?They are disproportionately younger, and they appear to have served more recently,? said Genevieve Kenney, a senior fellow with the Urban Institute and co-author of the report.

Kenney said the uninsured veterans also tended to have lower incomes and lower levels of education and were less likely to be full-time workers than the veterans with health coverage.

Contrary to popular belief, veterans are not automatically eligible for health care coverage once they leave the military. Jacob Gadd, deputy director for health care with the American Legion, said health coverage is generally provided to the poorest and the most badly injured of those who have served.

For example, combat veterans are eligible for five years of free medical care for any service-related issues. Other veterans can get at least some coverage for injuries if they can prove they are related to their service.

In addition, veterans who have very little income or are in financial distress can qualify to receive care through Veterans Affairs medical centers. (The VA provides an overview of who is eligible.)

Gadd said many veterans don?t appear to be aware of what benefits are available to them, especially if they have injuries from their time in service.

Dads, are you feeling pressure to do it all?

American Legion research has shown that only about half of military members who have returned home from deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan have enrolled in the VA for health care.

?We are worried about the other half, whether they know if benefits are available to them,? Gadd said.

Gadd said some veterans may be choosing not to seek out health care, especially if they have post-traumatic stress or other conditions they fear could carry a stigma.

There are clear costs to not having health insurance. Kenney, of the Urban Institute, said separate research has shown that high numbers of uninsured veterans have health issues that are not being addressed.

About one-third of uninsured veterans said they were delaying care due to cost, the researcher found.

BOSTON (AP) - Mike Aviles wanted to take advantage of his second chance, even though he wasn't entirely sure he earned it.

After an umpire's mistake on what should have been the third strike, Aviles lined a single to center to spark a three-run second inning that gave the Boston Red Sox the lead for good in a 7-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

"I got another swing, got another hit, one run scored there and we ended up scoring two more right after that," Aviles said. "It helped us out, gave us momentum and we kept rolling from there."

Felix Doubront pitched six innings of four-hit ball, Ryan Sweeney had three hits after being activated from the disabled list and Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered for Boston. The victory was tainted by an injury to 2008 AL MVP Dustin Pedroia, who left in the fifth inning with a jammed right thumb.

"He'll probably have some tests," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "Right now I don't think he could play tomorrow, if I was a betting man. But don't bet on it."

Detroit played most of the game without manager Jim Leyland and third-base coach Gene Lamont, who were ejected after the umpires appeared to blow the call on Aviles' foul tip. Leyland argued with the umpires until they tossed him from the game, then erupted in the visitor's clubhouse after it was over.

"There shouldn't have been a second-inning rally," he said, his voice rising. "There were three outs. I've been in the game a long time. ... You guys need to write something and hold people accountable."

With two outs and a runner on second, Aviles swung at what would have been strike three. It was ruled a foul tip by plate umpire Jeff Nelson, and on appeal to first base ump Bill Welke the ball was determined to hit the dirt before catcher Gerald Laird could glove it.

Replays appeared to show a clean swing and miss by Aviles, and Laird clearly caught the ball before it could hit the ground, meaning Aviles should have been out.

Aviles lined an RBI single to center. Daniel Nava doubled him home and scored on Pedroia's single to make it 4-1 before Adrian Gonzales hit an inning-ending groundout to first base.

"I'm pretty sure he caught it, but I'm not sure," said Aviles, who hadn't seen the replay. "The first thing I said was `bounce.' I didn't want to strike out. I don't know anybody that wants to strike out. I honestly don't know a hundred percent but he might have caught it."

Leyland came out to argue with third-base umpire Tim Tschida, joining an already angry Lamont. The manager had retreated to the dugout but was apparently still yelling at the crew when Welke tossed him.

After making a "Who, me?" expression, Leyland came back onto the field to argue some more.

In the visiting manager's office afterward, Leyland held forth in a profane rant about holding everyone in the game accountable, asking reporters, "Was that a ridiculous call? Then write that it was a ridiculous ... call!"

"I'm not going to sit here and rip umpires," Leyland said, alternating between enraged and merely agitated. "I'm the most protective person in the world of umpires. I protect them more than anybody in the game."

Doubront (5-2) gave up home runs to Gerald Laird and Delmon Young and just a pair of singles. He struck out six and walked one.

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer in the ninth, and Doug Fister (0-3) allowed six runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings.

Saltalamacchia, Aviles and David Ortiz all had two hits for Boston, which bounced back after blowing a ninth-inning lead against Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Red Sox scored one in the first and then three more in the second, taking advantage of a controversial call that led to the ejections.

Boston added one more in the third on Saltalamacchia's homer, then solo runs on Will Middlebrooks' infield single in the sixth and Aviles' RBI double in the eighth.

Laird had two hits for the Tigers.

NOTES: The Red Sox honored former right fielder Trot Nixon before the game for his contributions to the 2004 team that ended the franchise's 86-year championship drought. Nixon was presented with a No. 7 insert from the manual scoreboard and a mounted pine tar-stained helmet like the one he used to wear. ... Pedroia was hurt diving for Danny Worth's grounder at the end of the fifth inning. He was replaced by Nick Punto. .. California District Court: DOMA Unconstitutional

A California District Court judge has ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, and she?s the third one to do so.

Claudia Wilken, a district court judge for the northern district of California, ruled on Thursday that congress acted unconstitutionally in discriminating against gay couples in the 1996 Defence of Marriage Act (Doma).

Wilken became the first judge to rule against the controversial legislation since President Barack Obama threw his weight behind gay marriage earlier this month?

This follows a 2010 ruling by Judge Joseph Tauro in Massachusetts and a ruling earlier this year by Judge Jeffrey White in California.

Wilken said gays and lesbians were constitutionally protected from ?burdensome legislation that is the product of sheer antigay animus and devoid of any legitimate governmental purpose?

New Jersey mayor, son, arrested on charges they nuked recall website

The mayor of a small New Jersey hamlet has been arrested, along with his son, on federal charges that they shut down a website advocating the mayor's recall after breaking into the online accounts of political foes.

According to federal officials, Felix Roque, the 55-year-old mayor of West New York, New Jersey, and his son, Joseph Roque, 22, were arrested early Thursday morning by FBI agents. In February, the pair planned and executed the silencing of www.recallroque.com by gaining unauthorized access to the GoDaddy account used to control the domain name. An FBI special agent filed documents with these allegations in a New Jersey federal court. The father-and-son team also obtained e-mails and messages sent among opponents after gaining unauthorized access to e-mail and Facebook accounts.

"I have always treated you with respect and courtesy, but I have copies of everything sent to the website and communications with names," Mayor Roque wrote in an e-mail to one of the opponents, whose identity had remained unknown to the Roques until they gained illegal access to the accounts. "Remember, I am in the Army with many friends."

According to the account of FBI Special Agent Ignace Ertilus, Felix and Joseph Roque took a keen interest in the recall site as early as February. In an attempt to learn the identity of the person behind the site, the younger Roque set up an e-mail account under a fictitious name and contacted an address listed on the website. He offered some "very good leads" if the person would agree to meet him. When the requests were repeatedly rebuffed, Joseph Rogue allegedly tried another route. He pointed his browser to Google and typed the search strings "hacking a Go Daddy Site," "recallroque log-in," and "html hacking tutorial."

He eventually figured out how to reset the e-mail account that was used to register recallroque.com domain with GoDaddy, according to Ertilus. On February 8 at 4:49 pm, after gaining control of the GoDaddy account, he allegedly cancelled the domain name. This caused the recall website to go dark. Records of calls sent to and received by the cellphones of the two Roques indicated the two were in frequent contact during the eight hours when the son took over the accounts, Ertilus alleged.

Following the shutdown, Mayor Roque used the messages retrieved from the compromised accounts to identify the people who ran and supported it. On February 9, he used his iPhone to call the Hudson County (New Jersey) government official, identified in the criminal complaint as Victim 1, who had anonymously established the recall website. The older Roque then claimed to have proof that the official was involved with the site.

"Mayor Roque stated that he, the Mayor, had a friend in high levels of government who had shut the Recall Website down," the complaint alleged. "According to Victim 1, Mayor Roque stated that everyone would pay for getting involved against him."

The complaint was unsealed Thursday morning. It's the latest reminder that even in a world of sophisticated hacks and James Bond-style espionage malware, the most effective attacks often rely on trickery that is considerably more low-tech. Account takeovers affecting then-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, celebrity Xbox gamers, and ISP Comcast have all been pulled off by exploiting weaknesses in the way Yahoo, Microsoft, and other services go about resetting passwords reported as forgotten. To combat the practice, Google, Facebook, and a variety of other companies have begun using one-time passwords sent to cell phones or other "out-of-band" devices when performing sensitive account changes such as password resets.

The Roques are both charged with three counts of intentionally accessing computers without authorization or intentionally causing damage to a protected computer. They are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday afternoon. They have not yet entered a plea in the case. West New York is located about seven miles west of Manhattan and has a population of about 50,000, according to US census data. Ironically, Mayor Roque reportedly came to office after leading a successful recall against the previous mayor, Sal Vega. A press release from the US attorney's office in New Jersey is here.

The California Cook: Two cookies that go well with fruit

Strolling the Santa Monica Saturday farmers market the other day, thinking about dinner. Five pounds of that thumb-thick jumbo asparagus from Zuckerman Farms? Of course! I already had carrots and favas from my garden. I'd ordered a leg of lamb. But what's for dessert? Almond torte maybe? Lemon curd tart?

But all that late-season citrus ? Oro Blancos, grapefruits, blood oranges, tangerines ? I just couldn't resist them. So maybe I'd do a fruit salad with a spiced syrup? Or just tangerine sections sweetened a little with rosemary honey? Then, suddenly, my mind was made up for me: I tasted a wedge of Page mandarin from Armando Garcia's stand. The flavor was almost explosive: sweet, spicy, perfect all by itself. Honey? Syrup? Forget it, the juice was almost syrupy just as it was. There's nothing I could do to make this thing any better.

Still, even I'm not Chez Panisse-y enough to serve just a bowl of fruit and call it dessert. That's where cookies come in.

Just as we're heading into the heart of the fruit season, a simple cookie can be a cook's best friend. Right now we've got late-season citrus like those mandarins, terrific sweet strawberries, and the first apricots and cherries, then before you know it, peaches and nectarines. There's nothing that complements a great piece of fruit like a cookie.

I've got two old favorites that I fall back on regularly. The first is an almond macaroon. It's about as simple as a cookie can get ? just five ingredients: almonds, sugar, salt, egg whites and a whiff of vanilla. Grind the almonds, sugar, salt and vanilla to a fine powder; beat the egg whites to soft peaks and pulse them into the almond mixture. Roll between wet palms (they're sticky as heck) and bake.

The cookies come out of the oven crisp on the outside yet moist and chewy on the inside, with a flavor that is deeply and purely almond. A perfect match for citrus or stone fruit.

My other go-to cookie is an old-fashioned snickerdoodle. Its flavor is a little more complex than the macaroon ? a combination of browned wheat, the slight bitterness of cream of tartar and sweet spicy cinnamon sugar.

The recipe is my mom's, and I have a love-hate relationship with it. I can't tell you how many times I've labored all day over a big dinner party menu only to have everyone walk out telling me how great these danged cookies are.

I guess the only thing worse would be if they just talked about the fruit.
