First since '52: No talk of war in GOP speech

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With America embroiled in its longest armed conflict, Mitt Romney became the first Republican since 1952 to accept his party's nomination without mentioning war.

Three election cycles after the 2001 terrorist attacks, neither Romney nor his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, had anything to say about terrorism or war while on their party's biggest stage. The only one who did Thursday was actor Clint Eastwood, who won cheers for suggesting invading Afghanistan was a mistake and calling for an immediate withdrawal of troops ? a line that might have earned boos and catcalls four years ago.

The Romney strategy reflects the weak public support for the Afghanistan war, fatigue over a decade of terrorism fears and the central role of the economy in the campaign. But it was still a remarkable shift in tone for a party that, even in times of peace, has used the specter of war to call for greater military spending and tough foreign policy.

Candidates Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon criticized the handling of the Vietnam War. Bob Dole said the way to prevent conflict is to prepare for more, greater wars than a country will need to fight. Ronald Reagan warned that a weak nation would tempt the Soviet Union.

"Four times in my lifetime America has gone to war, bleeding the lives of its young men into the sands of beachheads, the fields of Europe and the jungles and rice paddies of Asia," Reagan said in 1980. "We know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak."

Even President Gerald Ford, who in 1976, declared that, "not a single American is at war anywhere on the face of this Earth tonight," went on to say, "A strong military posture is always the best insurance for peace."

Things are different now, 11 years after President George W. Bush pledged to "starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is no refuge or rest."

Osama bin Laden is dead. The Iraq war is over. Al-Qaida is weakened. The color coded alerts that for years warned of a constant, unseen danger have faded away. None of the presidential or vice presidential candidates for either party has ever served in the military, a first in 80 years.

And although 79,000 troops remain in Afghanistan, public support has eroded for the decadelong campaign there. An AP-GfK poll found in May that 66 percent of voters believe the country should not be involved in Afghanistan anymore. That same poll found that only 37 percent of Republicans backed the war.

Republican strategist Tony Fratto said was it odd, personally, to hear a major Republican speech with no mention of the issue that has so dominated the past decade. Fratto served as a White House spokesman and aide to the younger Bush, whose presidency was consumed by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But with 8.3 percent unemployment nationwide, Republicans see the economy as the driving issue this year. And Fratto said Romney's primary goal Thursday night was to connect with voters on a personal level and redraw the caricature of him as wooden and out of touch.

"If you're going to leave some things out, you're going to leave out things that aren't highest on the list of concerns of voters," Fratto said. "It's more reflective of what Americans are interested in hearing from their candidates right now."

Romney did briefly refer to Iran and said President Barack Obama had not done enough to prevent that country from pursuing nuclear weapons. But his only mention of war was not Iraq or Afghanistan. It was World War II, and he used it as a way to frame his life story.

"I was born in the middle of the century in the middle of the country, a classic baby boomer," Romney said. "It was a time when Americans were returning from war and eager to work."

Conservative commentator William Kristol, a Republican standard-bearer, criticized Romney's decision.

"Leave aside the question of the political wisdom of Romney's silence, and the opportunities it opens up for President Obama next week," Kristol noted on his blog. "What about the civic propriety of a presidential nominee failing even to mention, in his acceptance speech, a war we're fighting and our young men and women who are fighting it?"

At no point was the incongruity more apparent than during Eastwood's unscripted speech. The renowned filmmaker suggested that invading Afghanistan was a foolhardy decision and teased Obama for it, even though it began under Bush.

"You thought the war in Afghanistan was OK. You know, I mean, you thought that was something worth doing. We didn't check with the Russians to see how they did there for 10 years," Eastwood said to great laughter.

Then, talking about Obama's schedule for bringing troops home by the end of 2014, Eastwood said the sensible question was, "Why don't you just bring them home tomorrow morning?"

The quip earned him applause and cheers.

Hip-hop and fun twist to N-Day parade

Najib (centre) and other VIPs sing a patriotic song during the National Day parade at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur on August 31, 2012. Performers are seen shaking their pompoms in the foreground. ? Reuters pic

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 ? For many Malaysians, watching the National Day parade ? whether at the venue or on TV ? is a family tradition. You get up early and watch this splendid parade of soldiers, schoolchildren, policemen, marching bands representing us ? Malaysians ? and you are reminded that 55 years ago today our nation was born.

This year?s National Day parade at Dataran Merdeka in the capital city to celebrate Malaysia?s 55th year of independence was just as rousing but it had a little twist. A little ?street cred? had crept into the occasion.

A group of young people staged a hip-hop performance right before the grandstand and treated all the VIPs ? including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong ? to a hip-hop performance complete with their very own drum line performance.

It was fun, it was now.?

That it was part of the National Day parade was a nod that this is where our future lies. With our young people. This is the way forward.

Meanwhile, Bernama reports that some 13,000 participants from all walks of the country?s multi-ethnic society, particularly the younger Generation, took part in the parade, symbolising strong national unity and harmony.

Based on the theme ?1 Malaysia Janji Ditepati? (1 Malaysia Promises Fulfilled), the parade began soon after the King Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu?adzam Shah and the Queen Tuanku Haminah arrived at Dataran Merdeka at 8am sharp.

Their Majesties were welcomed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.?

The King then took the salute before the national anthem ?Negaraku? was played by the Royal Malay Regiment?s main band. ?

At the same time, seven Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) helicopters made a fly-pass, carrying the national flag Jalur Gemilang as well as the flags of the Malaysian Armed Forces, Royal Malaysian Army, Royal Malaysian Navy, RMAF, Royal Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) while emitting smoke in the colours of red, blue and yellow of the national flag.

Tuanku Abdul Halim then inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by 103 members of the regiment and this was followed by shouts of ?Daulat Tuanku? (Long Live the King) three times and the hoisting of the national flag accompanied to the ?Negaraku? and the firing of a 14-gun salute.?

Fifty-five participants made up of teachers and students, undergraduates of public and private higher learning institutions, government agencies and statutory bodies as well as disabled persons dressed in the traditional attire of the various races to symbolise Malaysia?s cultural diversity then took a pledge on upholding the Rukun Negara (National Philosophy).?

The group was led by Azrai Abdul Aziz, a student of Sekolah Menengah Taman Melawati Gombak.?

This was then followed by shouts of ?Merdeka? seven times and ?Janji Ditepati? three times.?

Next up was a colourful rhythmic display by students on the Rukun Negara.

The much awaited parade of contingents then followed beginning with the Malaysian Armed Forces band and coming behind them the contingents carrying

the Jalur Gemilang and the flags of all 13 states and the Federal Territories.

And in a first, the contingent representing government agencies was led by Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Dr Ali Hamsa accompanied by Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Zulkefli Mohd Zin and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar. ??

Also in the contingent were the secretaries-general of the various ministries in further reinforcing the ?55 Tahun Merdeka Janji Ditepati? (55 Years of Promises Fulfilled) theme.

The next contingent was that of uniformed bodies of the younger generation under the Future Young Leaders segment who performed the 1M4U dance, which received rave responses from the dignitaries present who also joined in singing the theme song.

Also taking part in the parade this time was an urban public transportation contingent comprising four Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) patrol cars, 55 1 Malaysia People?s Taxis and two RapidKL buses, which symbolised the transformation of the public transportation sector in the country.

The next segment showcased the national security contingent, which was also represented by its women personnel while the veteran warriors contingent came in antique cars used by national leaders when fighting for independence in the 1950s.?

Five helicopters used as military assets and for public security were also exhibited accompanied by the bands of their respective commands, namely the Malaysian Armed Forces, Royal Malaysian Navy, Royal Malaysian Air Force, Royal Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.?

The air space over Dataran Merdeka was also rocked by an air show by the security forces.?

The parade ended with a segment entitled ?Bangsa Menjadi Rakyat Malaysia? which commenced with performances by the younger generation via active and energetic movements accompanied by the song ?Drumline? and a medley of patriotic songs, namely ?Nadi Rakyat?, ?IM4U?, ?Janji Ditepati?, ?Tanggal 31?, ?1 Malaysia? and ending with ?Jalur Gemilang?.

The parade of almost two hours, which ended at about 10am, was also witnessed by Malaysians and tourists who had inundated Dataran Merdeka from as early as 6.30am, other than the millions who watched it on the RTM1 television channel.

Study explores medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements across states

Findings suggest need to ensure medical exemptions are granted only to children who truly need them

In states where medical exemptions from vaccination requirements for kindergarten students are easier to get, exemption rates are higher, potentially compromising herd immunity and posing a threat to children and others who truly should not be immunized because of underlying conditions, according to a study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases and now available online. Nationwide in scope, the study found inconsistency among states in standards allowing medical exemptions from school immunization requirements. The investigators concluded that medical exemptions should be monitored and continuously evaluated to ensure they are used appropriately.

In their study, Stephanie Stadlin, MPH, Robert A. Bednarczyk, PhD, and Saad B. Omer, MBBS, MPH, PhD, from the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, evaluated state medical exemptions from kindergarten entry requirements over seven school years (from 2004-'05 to 2010-'11), which totaled 87,631 medical exemptions nationwide over the period studied. The researchers found that, compared to states with more stringent criteria for getting medical exemptions, states with easier requirements saw a significant increase in these exemptions. Their findings suggest that requiring more accountability of both parents and physicians for granting medical exemptions can be helpful in ensuring that these exemptions are valid and not used as an alternative to non-medical exemptions because they are easier to obtain.

"The appropriate use of medical exemptions is important to maintaining sufficient herd immunity to protect those who should not be vaccinated due to medical contra-indications," said Dr. Omer, the senior investigator of the study. "Medical providers, parents, school officials, and state health officials are responsible for ensuring that medical exemptions are actually medically indicated."

In an accompanying editorial, Daniel A Salmon, PhD, MPH, and Neal Halsey, MD, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, noted that "children with valid medical exemptions need to be protected from exposure to vaccine preventable diseases by insuring high coverage rates among the rest of the population. Granting medical exemptions for invalid medical contraindications may promote unfounded vaccine safety concerns." The researchers' findings, they added, should be useful to those responsible for implementing and enforcing school immunization requirements at the state and local levels.

Fast Facts:

  1. Rates of medical exemptions from kindergarten immunization requirements were higher in states where these exemptions are easier to obtain and in states that allow permanent compared to temporary exemptions.
  2. The appropriate use of medical exemptions from immunization requirements is important in maintaining community or herd immunity and protecting public health.
  3. Improper medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements can result in serious and life-threatening infections in children and others who truly cannot be vaccinated due to underlying conditions.

Tips For Prevention And Treatment Of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a painful condition that occurs mainly in the lower legs and ankles, and can become dangerous if left untreated. The condition is often more prevalent in women than in men, affecting about 31 percent of women compared with 17 percent of men, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal.

Causes and Risk Factors

Varicose veins occur when the valves that regulate blood flow in your veins malfunction or weaken. When working properly, these valves close to push blood back toward the heart; as they weaken, blood can leak back into the veins and pool or collect, which enlarges the veins and can be painful. Various studies over the past two decades have shown that the primary factors the contribute to the condition include:

Being female

Older age

Obese, or high body mass index (BMI)

High blood pressure

Low levels of physical activity

Standing or sitting for long periods of time at work

In addition, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that genetics may play a role if you have a family history of weak valves, as well as hormonal changes in women that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, or from taking certain medications containing estrogen or progesterone.

Treatment and Prevention

Varicose veins rarely become a serious health problem; more often they simply cause discomfort and look unsightly. However, in some advanced cases they may lead to more serious conditions such as sores or ulcers, excessive bleeding following an injury, or blood clots. These clots can become life-threatening if they travel to other parts of the body, such as the heart, lungs, or brain.

There are many different treatment options for varicose veins, including lifestyle changes and medical interventions, and the type of treatment you get will be decided with your doctor based on the seriousness of your condition.

Compression stockings are tight socks designed to put pressure on the veins, pushing blood back out of the lower extremities and toward the heart. There are different levels of compression available, from light pressure for mild conditions to prescription-strength pressure, which are only available through medical supply and drugstores and must be fitted to the patient.

Sclerotherapy is perhaps the most common treatment, where a doctor injects a chemical into the vein so it will swell and seal shut, eliminating the flow of blood and turning the varicose vein into scar tissue, which fades within a few weeks. It is an effective out-patient procedure that allows you to get back to daily activity immediately.

Radiofrequency or laser techniques (endovenous) have replaced a surgical option for most patients because they can be done quickly and effectively in a doctor's office and don't require a hospital stay. The veins are sealed with a small inserted catheter, involving only local anesthesia. Other healthy veins in the surrounding area will take over, so no loss of blood flow occurs.

While the exact cause of varicose veins is not known, and is often a combination of many factors, the best ways to prevent it include regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy body weight, and avoiding standing or sitting for long periods of time. If you do have to stand or sit for extended times, wear compression stockings, shift your weight from one foot to the other regularly (while standing), and get up and move around often (while sitting).

If you think you may be suffering from varicose veins, talk to your doctor today to find out what treatment options are available for you.

AMD FX-4130 delivers 3.8GHz quad-core on a budget, A-Series chips get even cheaper

AMD FX4130 delivers 38GHz quadcore on a budget, Aseries chips get even cheaperIf you're building a starter desktop to get ready for school, you'll be glad to know that AMD is squeaking just a little more value for the dollar out of its processors. The new quad-core FX-4130 takes a 200MHz hop forward from its predecessor to a 3.8GHz base speed, and ramps up to 3.9GHz if it's feeling frisky. While it's thirstier than the earlier FX-4100 at 125W of maximum power draw, the unlocked chip's $112 retail cost is a potential sweet spot for those tailoring a system to a strict price. Anyone willing to trade overclocking support for yet more of a savings will be glad to know that AMD has been slashing the prices of its Fusion-based A-Series chips at the same time: the across-the-board cuts bring even the 2.9GHz A8-3850 down to $91. No breaks exist here for the performance crowd, alas, but AMD's new proposition might be just the excuse needed to build that budget Windows 8 PC.

Iraq executes 21 in single day

Iraq has executed 21 people convicted of terror-related charges, including three women, on the same day, a justice ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

"The justice ministry carried out 21 executions against those condemned of terrorist charges, including three women terrorists," Haidar al-Saadi said in a text message. He did not give any further details.

A justice ministry official said the executions were carried out on Monday morning.

Amnesty International in June condemned the "alarming" increase in executions in Iraq, which had at that point put at least 70 people to death this year, more than all of 2011.

Iraq has carried out several mass executions in 2012, including one in which 14 people were put to death on February 7, and another in which 17 were executed on January 31.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay expressed shock earlier this year at the number of executions, criticising the lack of transparency in court proceedings and calling for an immediate suspension of the death penalty.

EASY WAYS TO DEAL WITH OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS (GUEST ...

by pat brownlee on August 27, 2012

?All workplaces should be safe and not hazardous to the worker?s health and safety but unfortunately that is not always the case. Employers and employees have the responsibility to make sure the workplace is a safe environment and the hazards should be controlled immediately.

As a business owner, the responsibility lies on your shoulders and you should conduct ?risk assessment? to evaluate and prioritize the hazards. The best way to deal with occupational hazards is to deal with them before they become occupational accidents.? Here are some things you can do to assess the risks:

  • Observe the workplace and identify potential hazards. Most of them are regulated by federal and state laws, but??safthere are some that might have slipped through.
  • ?Have a safety plan, specific to the physical space of the business. Where are the exits, where is the ventilation, what?? are the procedures for shut-offs?
  • ?Have those safety measures clearly posted where workers can see them.
  • ?Stress the importance of health and safety in the workplace.
  • ?Have an open door policy in regards to health and safety issues.
  • ?Survey your employees or co-workers about their health and safety concerns.
  • ? Examine the sickness figures. Is a pattern emerging?

After you?ve identifies the safety issues, there are five ways to deal with occupational hazards:

  • Eliminate the hazard by removing it completely. This is by far the most effective method of control but it is not always applicable. If the work process is still in its development stages it is easier to correct.
  • Substitution ? Replacing one process with another to eliminate the risk. Changing chemicals to less harmful ones, replacing machines, adding air-condition units etc. Substitution also means changing work processes and equipment to do the job in a less harmful manner.
  • ?Engineering control ?Solving the problem in an engineering way like adding protective enclosures to the machine to prevent contact with dangerous moving parts. Controlling the dust by keeping a clean work environment and preventing it from spreading in the air is another form of engineering control. ?Adding safety measures as automatic shut offs, interlocking guards or operating the machine by remote control are also good examples.
  • Administrative control ? Limiting access to a certain area for only a handful of employees or limiting the number of hours workers can be in that place. Changing work schedules to allow more rest or shorter shifts.
  • Personal protection equipment ? providing your workers with protective gear to protect their eyes, ears and respiration. ?Adding protective clothing or footwear also falls into this category.

Some methods are more efficient than others, but it is a fact that a combination of the methods works the best. Employees are entitled to have a safe and healthy work environment that enables him/her to?perform his/her work without risking their health or their lives.

Real Estate Buying: How To Make The Process A Good One | Bob ...

Although there are smart real estate investments, there are also some bad decisions that could be made. Instead of fumbling around blindly and ultimately buying a house for way more than it?s worth, check out these real estate buying tips and make a great deal.

If you sell a home to a client, don?t lose touch. Contacting customers on each anniversary of the day they bought the home and during holidays allows you to stay in touch without seeming intrusive. They will remember how helpful you were when you contact them. When you sign a card or letter, or even on a phone call, remind them about how you work based on referrals, and would love it if they recommended your business to their friends.

Make sure you know what?s happening in your local housing market. Give City-data.com a visit or any other sites like it so you can learn about the average housing prices, number of foreclosures and other relevant market conditions within a 15 mile radius. You can also learn about demographics and employment in the area. A good location with good products can put you on top even if the trends are down.

When you are purchasing a home, make sure to explore all your financing options. You might be surprised at the number of programs out there that offer help with down payments. You never know for which you will qualify if you do not investigate. The amount of savings required to purchase a home can be significantly reduced by this and closing costs that are paid by the seller.

Closing Costs

Make sure you have an emergency fund set aside for extra costs that arise while purchasing property. The closing costs are usually calculated by adding the prorated taxes, bank points and down payment. Most of the time, closing costs also include improvement bonds, school taxes and other considerations.

You?ve finally decided to buy a house, but now you have to find a reputable real estate agent. You can do some online research, but it?s better to find a trustworthy agent through personal referrals. An agent that has achieved success in the past will be a great choice. Be certain to study up on him or her, and find someone that will always keep you in mind.

Closely track pre-foreclosure properties. If you have enough time to ferret out bargains on investment property, you might want to look at some that are in pre-foreclosure. Real estate in pre-foreclosure is delinquent, but not quite to the point of the bank stepping in and taking the home back. Lenders will give you lists of homes that are about to enter foreclosure. Another strategy you can use is advertising that you are paying cash for houses. Find the person who is presently paying the loan and bid several thousand above their payoff, if it fits the market value. You can get a great deal this way because most people don?t owe the full market value.

Always remember to be flexible in your choices. Sometimes you must choose between two major features if the price of having both falls outside of your price range. Consider all of the options that are available and weigh them out in terms of your preferred location, the desired features of the house and how much you can pay.

Investing in real estate is always a risky situation. Property values are now at a low since the market has crashed. This is a perfect time for first-time home buyers to get into a home, or for current home owners to invest in a larger property. Don?t wait too long because before you know it, the market will quickly rise, and you?ll want to have a nice piece of real estate in your back pocket to be able to reap the benefits.

Term Goals

Do your homework and research rental properties. If you are thinking about buying a rental property, don?t sign on the dotted line if you haven?t thoroughly reviewed at least two years worth of records. The reason for this is that you have to make sure that the seller has made full and accurate disclosure regarding the property?s potential for income. Your lender will most likely also want to see verification of income before they will issue a purchase loan for the property.

When deciding to buy real estate, always take into account your goals. Decide if you have short term goals or long term goals to be met. If the current property you are considering does not fit within your goals, don?t even consider it. Many property owners fail to make sure their needs are met and end up with a losing investment.

Once you have real estate, you can increase your investment by simply completing some repairs or remodeling projects. You will have the benefit of having an immediate return on your investment as your property value will go up. Sometimes, the property value will increase more than your investment value.

An approval in-hand makes you look that much better from the seller?s perspective. Besides, being approved for a mortgage can take some time and you might lose a good opportunity if another buyer comes along with a letter of approval.

If the home needs a few fixes, it may sell for a much lower price. This will let you save some money in the beginning, and fix up the house as you see fit. You can not only redesign the home over time, but the modifications you are making build equity you can trade on later. It is important to look at the positive potential in the home rather than the drawbacks. The home of your dreams may be concealed behind that ugly exterior.

If you enter the real estate market unprepared, the odds are heavily stacked against you. It?s highly likely that you will waste money, or even cost yourself a good house. Use these suggestions to find out what you need to do to find the best deals in housing markets. The next step is to take advantage of what you have

Real Estate Buying Advice And Tips Here ? The Flower Cottage Blog

When starting the search for a new home, research the area to find the neighborhoods that you would be happy in. Make sure to check out crime statistics, school quality, and the areas walking score. If you have an agent, let them know the type of area that you are looking for and they can point you in the right direction.

To make sure you get everything you want out of your real estate purchase, put it in writing. Studies have shown that buyers who write down their goals have a higher chance of reaching them. Writing down details about each home you see will keep them fresh in your mind, and will allow you to evaluate them more objectively.

When viewing a property, don?t forget to check out the outdoor areas. Take a look at the downspouts, gutters, roof, window and door frames and overall condition of the outside of the house. Old properties especially may require a lot of replacements and you should factor in the cost of these replacements when considering your offer to the seller.

Find a realtor that is knowledgeable about the area in which you are looking for a home. You must be able to trust the realtor that is representing you so you can feel comfortable when they represent your interests during negotiations, It?s important to know that they are doing what they can to get you in the right home for the right price.

If you have the financial wherewithal to do it, then when you are buying a house go for a fifteen year fixed mortgage rather than the thirty year fixed. Doing so may cost more on a month to month basis, however, over the course of the thirty years you would have ended up paying many thousands of dollars more in interest on the thirty year mortgage.

If an inspector walks through your new home and finds that many repairs are needed, issue a request for repair from the previous owner. This means that they have to give you some or all of the money for repairs or if you pay for them, they have to reimburse you.

Homes with appliances available in them are great, but they?re also very pricy. And don?t forget that we?re talking about other people?s used appliances. You can save tens of thousands by opting for a home without appliances, and putting new appliances in will only cost a few thousand. That?s a win-win.

Before shopping for a new home, it is wise to have an initial consultation with a mortgage lender. By doing this, it is possible to receive a pre-qualification or pre-approval, which gives buyers increased credibility in the eyes of sellers. This process also helps buyers understand exactly how much house they can afford and helps narrow their home search parameters.

If you are unsure whether or not a property value is fair or not, do not hesitate to ask a real estate agent or another real estate investor. Never make a purchase without obtaining the fair market value that a property is worth. This will keep you from overspending on a home.

It?s easy to quickly lose steam once you?ve put in your offer on a home. From the seller not accepting it, to unexpected surprises coming back in the inspection report, this article has given you ways to navigate through the process without getting taken advantage of and keeping your sanity at the same time.

When looking for branson mo real estate make sure you slow down when making this important decision and use a real estate agent you trust.

Egypt seeks regional meeting over Syria crisis

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's foreign minister wants Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran and Egypt to meet for talks to work out how to end the Syrian crisis, Egyptian officials said on Sunday, a meeting that would include a regional ally as well as opponents of Damascus.

Iran backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose army and air force have been fighting rebels for 17 months, and Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt - under new president, Mohamed Mursi - have all called for an end to Assad's rule.

Mursi put forward the plan at an Islamic conference in Saudi Arabia earlier this month. This week, he travels to China and then to Iran for a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, a group of 120 developing nations.

"We are currently conducting a series of discussions to explore the possibility of holding such a meeting and the expected outcome," Amr Roshdy, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman told Reuters, about the plans for four-way talks.

He did not say when any such meeting would take place.

"We already contacted Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran," he said, referring to telephone talks between Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and officials in the three other countries.

Egyptian presidential spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters that setting up such a group would bring together nations which have "real influence" and described Iran as "part of the solution, not part of the problem".

A Turkish official said Ankara welcomed the idea, a position echoed by an Iranian Foreign Ministry official.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran had "its own views about the political process in Syria" which it would put forward during any such gathering, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"We see any foreign intervention, terrorist actions and armed movements as against the wishes of the people of Syria and we believe these foreign interventions are aimed at eliminating the chance to achieve reforms," he said.

Mursi's trip to Iran will be the first by an Egyptian president since the 1979 Iranian revolution. The two nations do not have diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level, but have missions staffed by diplomats in each others' countries.

The Egyptian presidential spokesman said the trip to Tehran would last only a few hours. Western diplomats said they would be watching to see whether Mursi used the platform to press for support for change in Syria.

Egypt is currently chair of the Non-Aligned Movement and that position will pass to Iran at the Tehran meeting.

EXCLUSIVE: Samsung is reportedly working on a Galaxy S III-based 16MP point-and-shoot

A tipster just sent us some really interesting gossip ? Samsung is working on a Galaxy S III-based point-and-shoot camera. The convergence device ? called Samsung Galaxy S camera ? features the trademark 4.8? SuperAMOLED screen and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (no info on the chipset though).

Yes, it does sound a bit too good to be true, but let?s dream for a moment and here what our tipster (who has proven reliable on previous occasions) has to say about this camera he claims to have seen with his own eye two weeks ago.

The Samsung Galaxy S camera is described as a Galaxy S III glued to the back of a point-and-shoot camera, with no physical buttons on the back. It is reportedly 1.5 to 2 times thicker than an S III, but that seems too little given the rumored 10x zoom. The camera will feature a 16MP sensor of unkown size, a pop-out Xenon flash and a curved right side to help with the ergonomics.

The Galaxy S Camera will run on Ice Cream Sandwich and will come in Wi-Fi and 3G + Wi-Fi versions (only mobile data, no voice), which is reportedly being pitched to various carriers.

This camera will supposedly be announced at IFA, alongside the Galaxy Note 2. Samsung do have a tendency to announce experimental products at IFA, like its first tablet two year ago and then its first AMOLED tablet and phoneblet last year, so there?s a chance of this turning out to be true. It won?t be the first Android-powered camera either, but having seen no actual proof of the product ourselves, we advise you to take this all with a pinch of salt.

Thanks to our tipster, who requested to remain anonymous.

Note that the image above is just a Photoshop mock-up based on the description we got and not an actual product image.

Virus detector harnesses ring of light in 'whispering gallery mode'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? By affixing nanoscale gold spheres onto a microscopic bead of glass, researchers have created a super-sensor that can detect even single samples of the smallest known viruses. The sensor uses a peculiar behavior of light known as "whispering gallery mode," named after the famous circular gallery in St. Paul's Cathedral in London, where a whisper near the wall can be heard around the gallery.

In a similar way, waves of light are sent whirling around the inside of a small glass bead, resonating at a specific frequency. Just as a small object on a vibrating violin string can change its frequency -- ever so slightly -- so too can a virus landing on the sensor change the resonant frequency of the light. With the initial glass sphere, researchers were able to detect changes in frequency from viruses about the size of influenza, a relatively large virus.

The system, however, was not sensitive enough to detect anything smaller, such as the Polio virus. The researchers were able to increase the sensitivity of the device nearly seventyfold by adding gold nanospheres to the surface of the glass, which created what the researchers referred to as "plasmonic hot spots" -- areas where the light waves coupled with waves of electrons.

This hybrid sensor not only detected the presence of the MS2 virus -- the current light-weight in the world of RNA viruses -- it also was able to determine the weight of the virus by measuring the precise frequency change of the light.

With a few minor adjustments, the sensor should also be able to detect single proteins, such as cancer markers that appear in the blood long before outward signs of cancer can be detected. The results were published in the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journal Applied Physics Letters.

What Causes Childhood Obesity? ? Part 42Children's Health and ...

As many of my regular viewers to this web blog know, there are many factors contributing to childhood obesity. I post daily here about it, whether news print articles, opinions, feedback, or just personal opinion.

Recently, I wrote an article for Yahoo! (click here) about childhood obesity. I started searching for sources for this article, and received over 100 responses to the question, ?What do you think caused the rise in childhood obesity?? Responses came from professional and Olympic athletes, fitness experts, health experts, nutritionist, and parents.

I was unable to use everyone?s feedback, but thought it would be great to post some of their responses on my blog in a new web series, ?What Causes Childhood Obesity.? I hope that you enjoy the opinions here from various individuals. Please remember, my including their posts does not necessarily mean I agree or endorse their opinion, rather, a place to share other people?s thoughts.

Keeping Kids Fit

Opinion: Andrea Metcalf

I believe the change in school mandates for including PE in the curriculum across the country has had a significant effect on childhood obesity rates. Illinois is the only state that still requires a physical education component in the school system. We have cut funding to something that should be a requirement ? movement for our children. The ?recess? periods aren?t enough and have no purpose or understanding. Additionally, products for dietary choices have increased ? at one time there were 2 snack choices or brands ? now 80% of the grocery store choices are nutrient poor and higher calorie than needed to grow a healthy child. Lastly, it cannot be forgotten that ?play? has now become more organized and competitive leaving many children not wanting to participate. We took the backyard games and put them on parent coaching/raging fields.

Replace morning school rituals of attendance/pledge of allegiance ( which many have done away with anyway ) and include a 15 minute stretch warm up or activity. Each teacher could start and end the day with this practice.
