fire engineLOCAL firefighters have issued a warning to the public not to attempt crossing fords, after hauling several vehicles out of Bucklebury Ford in the past few months ? most recently yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).

According to Phil Knight, the manager of White Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one crew from Newbury, a second from Tilehurst and a third from Caversham were called at 1.30pm yesterday, after a van stalled in Bucklebury Ford, situated in Brocks Lane, and which halted in two-and-a-half feet of water.

The two occupants remained inside the vehicle and telephoned the emergency services for help.

Firefighters winched the van to safety and closed the incident after half an hour.

Pointing out fire services had been called several times in recent months to Bucklebury Ford to rescue stranded vehicles, Mr Knight continued:

?At this time of year and with the amount of rain we have had, it is not wise to go through a ford and especially in view of the fact there was a fatality at Headley ford in April last year.?

Over the Berkshire Hampshire border, concrete barriers were installed at Headley Ford, in Thornford Road, the day after an October 23 inquest into the death of a Middlesex judge, 52-year-old Jonathan Gammon. The inquest heard that the car he was a passenger in was swept away in the swollen River Enborne.

In December, firefighters from four local fire stations ? a total 20 firefighters ? were called out to Bucklebury Ford to haul out a van from two feet of water ? the second incident at this ford in a two week period in December.
