New Savile allegations add to pressure on BBC

LONDON (Reuters) - Fresh allegations emerged on Wednesday of sexual misconduct by late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, further damaging the corporation's reputation and increasing pressure on its management.

Facing questions on how suspicions about Savile were handled are BBC head George Entwistle and his predecessor Mark Thompson, new CEO of the New York Times co. Two independent inquiries and a police investigation are under way.

Police looking into the hundreds of allegations, mostly from the 1970s and 80s, of sexual abuse involving Savile - who died last year - arrested 1970s pop star Gary Glitter earlier this week. More arrests are expected.

Savile was regularly allowed to take "star-struck" young women into private bedrooms at a hospital in northern England, Terry Pratt, a former porter there, told the BBC on Wednesday.

Savile, a fund-raiser for Leeds General Infirmary, would regularly arrive at the hospital late at night with two women, go to the nurses' flats and leave before dawn.

"He would go up and see the lad on the desk ... he'd take the key and ... would walk out and the two women would follow him towards the nurses' home," he told the BBC. Pratt said the women seemed "star-struck" and "not very streetwise".

The hospital said in a statement: "We continue to be shocked by each new allegation. It is important that they are investigated properly".

The report came a day after a former royal aide said Savile's behavior on visits to Prince Charles' residence, St James' Palace, had aroused "concern and suspicion".

Dickie Arbiter told the Guardian newspaper Savile would greet young women working at the palace by "rubbing his lips all the way up their arms".

An ex-patient at the secure hospital Broadmoor has shed light on how difficult it was for individuals to come out against Savile at the height of his fame.

According to the tabloid Sun, the woman was put in solitary confinement for six months after telling a nurse Savile had sexually assaulted her.

The nurse accused her of "bizarre made-up thoughts".

An inquiry into whether the BBC's culture and practices enabled sexual misconduct to go undetected in the Savile years began this week, led by former Appeal Court judge Dame Janet Smith. She is expected to publish her findings by December.

Dubai: Week 35 - Notes by Nectar

What a busy week! I had my usual work and gym sessions but it was pretty busy otherwise as well.

On Sunday afternoon, Mum and I decided to go out for lunch. We ended up at the Cheesecake Factory - I really enjoyed their herb-crusted salmon the last time we went and I wanted it again! We shared the spinach and cheese dip as a starter and then I got my salmon. Mum ordered the Caesar salad - and even though she ordered the starter portion she had trouble finishing it. The portions are huge there! We skipped dessert though - we were both very full.

That night my cousin invited me to her book group as a one-off. She had asked me when I moved to Dubai whether I wanted to join them but I declined. She had told me they weren't a serious group and I wasn't sure it was for me. Anyway, the reason I went on Sunday was because they were discussing The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and I'd already read it a few years ago for my book group in London. I told her to let me know when she finished it so we could talk about it - so she invited me to join them. It's a fantastic book - if you haven't read it, I suggest you do so. It's a quick read and even though I?read it in 2 days, I haven't been able to forget it.?

I knew all the girls at book group already, apart from one. There was wine and appetisers followed by a full dinner. We discussed the book from time to time, and there was also more discussion about schools, Diwali, and 50 Shades of Grey. I think the trouble with meeting for the entire evening is that it's easy to digress and come back to the book (several times). I much prefer book groups where you meet for an hour or so, discuss the book, and hang around at the end if you want to. I didn't get home until midnight.?

Monday was uneventful.

On Tuesday night I had dinner at Spectrum at the Fairmont with two of my cousins. It was quite crowded. We skipped the starters and ordered main courses only: black pepper beef, Thai green chicken curry, pad thai. We didn't have dessert either. After dinner I rushed home to collect a parcel and then went back to the Fairmont to meet a friend who was leaving for London that night. We had a drink at Bridges, the sports bar at the Fairmont. I was home by midnight.

I didn't sleep very well on Tuesday night and was quite tired on Wednesday. It was a long weekend here in Dubai, due to the Eid holidays. Thursday and Sunday were both holidays.

I stayed in on Wednesday night - I was in bed by 11 and passed out by midnight.

I was home for most of Thursday. That night a friend invited me to someone's house party in Marina. It was a fun evening - but you would think I'd have learned by now not to mix my drinks. At about 2am, six of us headed to Amika at the H Hotel for more drinks and dancing. We left when they closed and I got home after 3.30am.?

I was up earlyish on Friday but then went back to sleep as my eyes were burning! I eventually got out of bed at 1pm. All I wanted was houmous - it's my new favourite hangover food.

Mum had some errands to run so I went to Mercato with her at about 5pm. After that we walked over to Choithram's to pick up a couple of things for her trip to Jamaica and waited for a cab on the main road. There were none. We waited 20 minutes and then decided we'd start walking. Mum suggested going back to Mercato and waiting for a cab there but I'd seen the queue for taxis when we left and it would have been even longer an hour later.?

We ended up walking home. It took about 40 minutes which is fine, but it was hot. We were sweaty and my hair looked like a nest. We got home just after 7pm, I got ready to see Enrique and then left a bit before 8pm.

At midnight after the concert, my friend insisted I go to a house party in Rashidiya with her. I wasn't even dressed for a party - I was in jeans and a top. Plus, I was tired after walking home and standing throughout the concert. She told me that the guy whose house it was worked in the restaurant industry and there would be good food there. That worked. I'd barely eaten anything all day and I told her I'd go for one drink only.

Well, that's not what happened. We got there, I sat at their bar and was spoiled rotten by flowing champagne and dim sum, and a fun group of people. Guests included: a sommelier at a top Dubai restaurant, a chef at another top Dubai restaurant, an Emirates pilot, and several other interesting people who were very welcoming.?

I got home at 5.30am. What a night!

Saturday was painful. I'd only slept 3 hours and we were meeting my cousins for lunch at the Dubai Mall. The mall was a zoo - we ended up having lunch at PF Chang, outdoors. It was quite nice but I could barely string a sentence together and just wanted to be left in my zombie-like state. When I got home I got back into bed and tried to nap.

That night my cousin and I had dinner at Spectrum (yes, again). We ordered a bottle of wine - I couldn't believe I was going to drink again after the two nights I'd had. We had the hot mezze platter to start and shared a chicken biryani for our main course. I was home by midnight.?

I love my life.

Renovated Home Theater Packs Powerful Audio Punch - CE Pro ...

Big, beefy surround sound systems are usually reserved for dedicated home theaters. But in this multifunctional, lower-level entertainment area, the owners decided to go all-out by equipping it with nine Triad speakers and two subwoofers, creating a 9.2-channel surround-sound system that could blow their socks off.

Nine speakers and two subwoofers do a nice job of wrapping theatergoers in amazing sound, so you?d think they?d be a huge design element of the space. Not so. Stone Glidden in King of Prussia, Pa., mounted all of the speakers between the wall studs as the 2,000-square-foot lower level was being renovated.

The studs were then covered with fabric paneling from Novawall. The fabric is designed specifically for home theaters, allowing sound from the speakers to travel through the weave - while providing an additional 2 inches behind for foam core insulation that helps optimize the room acoustics.

Placing the speakers behind offered yet another advantage for the homeowners: It would protect the gear from the hands of their two young children. ?They really wanted a place where they could have fun but not worry about accidentally knocking over a speaker or spilling something on it,? says Tom Stone, president of Stone Glidden.

It takes a large speaker - and lots of them - to fill a space as large as this remodeled lower level. That?s one of the reasons Stone Glidden recommended a 9.2-channel surround-sound arrangement for the theater portion of the 2,000-square-foot rec room. You?d never know there were that many speakers, though ? until you hear the audio. The sound seemingly emanates from the walls.

The speakers - InWall Bronze/4 LCR models from Triad - were mounted between the wall studs during the construction of the room and covered completely with acoustical fabric. Designed specifically for in-wall installation, the InWall Bronze/4 LCRs feature a rigid, braced enclosure to prevent sound waves from bleeding into adjacent rooms.

The Control4 system selected as the room?s mode of control is just as kid-friendly. Glidden and his team programmed the system so the entire theater could be revved up by just touching one button on a wireless Wi-Fi-enabled Control4 touchpanel. The command activates the Integra surround-sound receiver and Blu-ray player, while firing up the Runco video projector. In seconds, the movie is displayed on a 119-inch Da-Lite screen.

The touchpanel does other tricks, too. The family can use it to have audio and video signals travel from an A/V rack inside a specially constructed closet to the 37-inch Samsung displays in the exercise room and bar - as well as a TV in the kids? play area. Each ancillary entertainment space is equipped with in-ceiling speakers from Niles Audio.

These speakers can also broadcast music, as selected by the family from the Control4 touchpanel, from an iPod dock or the Rhapsody music service available through the Control4 processor. The result is entertainment that flows evenly and seamlessly from space to space and technology that helps the family get what they want where they want it, with nothing more than a touch of a button.

The actual purpose of a virus is often all sorts of points, from merely annoying and even benign intentions to highly extreme breaches of someone?s personal or monetary safety.

At times the function of virus protection computer software is unclear due to the fact many different words, like malware and spyware, are thrown about devoid of any cautious regard to their usage. Northeast travel slowly resumes

Travelers stranded by Hurricane Sandy are seeing service slowly restored across the Northeast. But it'll be days before things are close to normal.

The busy Northeast travel corridor ground to a halt when the huge storm slammed into New Jersey Monday evening. Train tunnels flooded, power went out, and forecasts of high winds forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights.

Travelers and commuters were forced to cobble together ways to get home, or stay where they were.

But by Wednesday, the region's massive network of planes, trains and buses was slowly restarting.

Flights resumed at airports, including two of New York City's three major airports. Limited subway service is expected Thursday in the city.

Major rail service in the region remained largely suspended, however. While some commuter lines are expected back Wednesday afternoon, Amtrak's Northeast Regional service between Newark, N.J., and Boston is suspended and so is Acela Express service for the Northeast corridor. No date is set for resumption of that service.

Air travelers stranded by Sandy are a little closer to getting home. There are limited flights at John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International. The city's third major airport, LaGuardia, is still closed as authorities assessed the damage from the huge storm. Travelers hoping to fly out of New York are being told to check with their airline before heading to the airport.

Airports in Washington and Philadelphia re-opened on Tuesday.

FlightStats said the storm had caused more than 19,000 cancellations since it began, including 2,820 cancellations in North America on Wednesday.

Delta was resuming some flights at JFK on Wednesday. But other airlines, including American and Southwest, both said they won't resume New York flights until Thursday.

LaGuardia was another story. Several airlines said they hoped to resume flying there on Thursday. But airport authorities said they don't know yet when LaGuardia will reopen.

"There are a lot of contingencies before we can re-open at LaGuardia," Southwest spokesman Paul Flaningan said. "It's still barricaded at the front entrance, which makes drop-offs from taxis and buses difficult."

Airlines continued to waive fees to change tickets for flights to New York airports. Delta and United said that anyone who planned to fly there through Saturday could change their ticket. However, the re-booked travel still had to begin by Nov. 9, giving travelers a relatively narrow window to make their trip.

American's waiver was broader, covering New York tickets through Nov. 7, and allowing rebooked travel through Dec. 20.

Amtrak said on Wednesday that it has restored train service to Newark airport. But service to and from New York's Penn Station was still not operating because tunnels under the Hudson and East rivers are flooded.

Retirement Changes for 401k Plans & IRA's | Annuity Think Tank: Blog

In the U.S. News & World Report article ?401(k) and IRA Changes Coming in 2013,? Emily Brandon tells us that there are some changes coming to your retirement plans soon. First of all, you will be able to defer taxes on $500 more that you are currently in your 401k and IRA plans. There will be higher contribution limits in both 401k and IRA plans, though the changes for each type of plan are a little different. Contribution limits are increasing from $17,000 to $17,500 for 401k?s, 403b?s, and Thrift Savings Plans. Employees who are 50 and above who are trying to catch-up with their retirement savings will still have a limit of $5,500 for their 401k catch-up. Some advisors recommend adding to your 401k savings each time you get a raise, so that you are increasing savings and not trying to play catch-up.

?

For IRA?s, employees who meet their income requirements will be able to contribute $5,500 instead of $5,000 next year. The IRA catch-up contribution limit also remains unchanged at $1,000. This increased limit gives either the benefit of increasing your tax deductions or increasing your tax-free investments, depending on what money you use for your IRA. The income limits for IRA deductions will be increasing in 2013. Workers who have a retirement plan at work and contribute to a traditional IRA will have their deduction phased out if their adjusted gross income is between $59,000 and $69,000. Other income limits have increased as well based on the increased cost of living index. Check with your plan administrator to see if your income limit has increased and by how much.

?

401k plan participants will see their fees disclosed much more prominently on their 2013 statements. Regulations put in place this year by the Labor Department call for fee disclosure along with account returns compared to a benchmark return to be on quarterly and annual 401k statements. This gives you an easier way to see if you are happy with the funds in which you are invested. Another recent proposition by the government was to put 401k annuity information on annual statements as well. Employees can see how much their monthly annuity payment would be should they rollover their 401k into an annuity at retirement.

?

The limits on Roth IRA?s are also increasing. The contribution limit for single people and heads of household has gone up to a range of $112,000 to $127,000, an increase of $2,000. The income limit for couples went up $5,000 to a range of $178,000 to $188,000. Those who earn more than the Roth IRA contribution limits are able to convert some of their traditional IRA?s into a Roth IRA to increase their tax-free investments. Finally, the income limit to receive a saver?s tax credit has increased as well. Couples can earn the retirement saver?s credit if they earn under $59,000, an increase of $1,500 from 2012. The single person?s income increase will be $750 and the head of household increase will be $1,125. If you have questions about any of these retirement savings changes occurring in 2013, make sure to speak with your advisor or contact the federal government or IRS.

Wire Jewelry Idea for
October 31, 2012

Shop for Jewelry Chains

What?s Viking Knit Chain?

Viking knit and Spool knit chain are two types of jewelry chain you can make at home! Viking knit chain is a bit of a weave, created by guiding fine-gauge wire through previously-made loops. Spool knit chain looks similar, but is slightly different, coaxing the wire into interlocking loops. Both types of chain can be made from just 1 continuous piece of wire, then guided through a drawplate to stretch and even out the stitches, resulting in a long, narrow chain.

Both of these chains have been traced back through history thousands of years; Viking knit got its name from being found in graves in Scandanavia ? some fragments suggest to archaeologists that Vikings and other cultures in ancient Europe would cut this chain into segments and use it as currency!

You?ll want to use a wooden drawplate for this. Metal drawplates are for drawing down individual pieces of wire, so they?re too small to use for reducing chain. A wooden draw plate will gently coax your wire chain into longer and narrower segments while allowing the wire to glide past.

Albina Manning taught us how to make Viking Knit Chain in her DVD. You?ll get to see every step as she makes her own tools, creates the stitch, joins wire, draws the chain through a wooden drawplate, and finishes the chain with a clasp. Click here to check out the DVD.

What knitters call I-cord is also called spool knitting, or using a knitting nancy or knitting spool. This ultimately gives a similar effect as Viking Knit, but uses a different method. Instead of feeding the wire through existing loops like in Viking Knit, the wire is wound around (typically) 4 pegs. These pegs hold loops of wire, and as more wire is wound around the pegs, you lift up the loop, slide it over the new wire, and off the peg, joining the chain. This makes a real knit stitch, as if you?d made it on double-pointed needles (but much less fiddly). This chain doesn?t usually have the even, sleek stitches that Viking Knit has, and can take longer because of having to pass the loops over.

Both styles of chain can easily be embellished by sliding beads onto the wire. With spool knitting, be sure to slide them on ahead of time, because the end of your wire disappears into the chain!

You can make your own spool with a piece of wood with a hole drilled in it and cotter pins, or I?m sure you can find a knitting nancy tool at different stores. Here?s a demonstration, using yarn, of how to set the tool up. You?ll use wire the same way as yarn!

To finish the chain, the best way seems to be to cover the end with a cone bead, sliding the cone over any remaining wire, and make a wrapped loop after the cone bead to lock it in place. Then attach the clasps of your choice.

This is similar to making a wire chain with crochet. Have you made a crochet wire chain? Send a picture of your chain to tips@wire-sculpture.com and I?ll add your picture to this article!

Hit a lull in your chain making? Try using 2 strands of 30-gauge wire instead of one strand of 26 or 28. Try different colors, too!

Close Call Sports: UEFL Awards: Noteworthy Umps: A Hernandez ...

2012 UEFL Awards: Noteworthy Umpires: Angel Hernandez, Chris Guccione (55, 68)
Voting Results (min. 10%): Hernandez 15%, Guccione 12%, Jim Joyce 11%, Dan Bellino 10%, Wally Bell 10%.

Angel Hernandez and Chris Guccione are the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League's 2012 noteworthy umpires.

In his 20th MLB season, Angel Hernandez concluded 2012 with zero ejections following a four ejection season in 2011 during which he moved from Joe West's crew; Hernandez's 2012 crew featured the injured Ed Rapuano. Hernandez notably?called a balk on Astros pitcher Armando Galarraga during an August 9 game and correctly enforced the balk over the resultant sacrifice fly, while Angel's "Hernandez Hustle" as the right field umpire during Game 3 of the Orioles-Yankees ALDS was praised by several commenters. In his 6th season of MLB service (11th overall, 4th on the full-time roster), Chris Guccione finished 2012 with zero ejections following a three ejection season in 2011. Involved in the comedic, replay-aided home run recreation game on September 30, it was Guccione's vacation fill-in, Angel Campos, whose ejection of Dodgers Matt Kemp and Joe Blanton on August 16 coincided with chief Tim Tschida's ejection of manager Don Mattingly; Mattingly was suspended two games for his extended argument (Ejections 123, 124, 125). In September, Guccione was selected to his third consecutive postseason and his first Championship Series, the 2012 NLCS. Guccione also appeared in right field during the inaugural AL Wild Card Game.

A back-to-back winner, Guccione received the UEFL's Noteworthy Umpire of the Year Award in 2011.

Angel Hernandez now has 5 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (2 Previous + 3 Award = 5).
Chris Guccione now has 7 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (4 Previous + 3 Award = 7).

The next postseason award, Ejections of the Year, will be released tomorrow.

New study sheds light on how and when vision evolved

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Opsins, the light-sensitive proteins key to vision, may have evolved earlier and undergone fewer genetic changes than previously believed, according to a new study from the National University of Ireland Maynooth and the University of Bristol published October 29 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) .

The study, which used computer modelling to provide a detailed picture of how and when opsins evolved, sheds light on the origin of sight in animals, including humans. The evolutionary origins of vision remain hotly debated, partly due to inconsistent reports of phylogenetic relationships among the earliest opsin-possessing animals.

Dr Davide Pisani of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences and colleagues at NUI Maynooth performed a computational analysis to test every hypothesis of opsin evolution proposed to date. The analysis incorporated all available genomic information from all relevant animal lineages, including a newly sequenced group of sponges (Oscarella carmela) and the Cnidarians, a group of animals thought to have possessed the world's earliest eyes.

Using this information, the researchers developed a timeline with an opsin ancestor common to all groups appearing some 700 million years ago. This opsin was considered 'blind' yet underwent key genetic changes over the span of 11 million years that conveyed the ability to detect light.

Dr Pisani said: "The great relevance of our study is that we traced the earliest origin of vision and we found that it originated only once in animals. This is an astonishing discovery because it implies that our study uncovered, in consequence, how and when vision evolved in humans."

Text Messaging Mobile Cell Phone SMS | TOP NEWS

Why is Text Messaging so popular asked a very nice old lady at the coffee shop the other day. One gentleman near her stated; ?You really wouldn?t understand unless you try it.? Well, that does make sense doesn?t it? In review of this conversation on text messaging which lasted a good hour, it seems that the consensus is that text messaging, sending a quick thought to someone, is actually closer to how people communicate than was previously thought. As a writer of screen plays amongst other things, I always found it fascinating how many lines were just:
?Yes?
?Yeah Right?
?Okay by me?
?Sounds good?
?No way?
?See you then?
?Running late again?
Since humans communicate like this most often, it seems that text messaging fits into a nice niche between phone calls and emails, as it fills in the gap. Now that more and more people are trying text messaging and really digging it, more folks are looking at ways to save money, such as unlimited text messaging services on their cell phone bills. This begs one to ask, how can the old telephone system survive and profit if everyone is switching to cell phones and text messaging? Will the old standard phone service be a thing of the past? Many folks now are opting for cell phone service and disconnecting their phone lines to their home to save on their phone bills. It makes sense doesn?t it. Save a hundred dollars a month by turning off the home phone service, because you have to have a cell phone anyway, why have two phones? Text messaging is the wave of the future, even grandma thinks so now.

VMFP Endorses Obama for President

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Veterans and Military Families for Progress proudly and confidently has chosen to endorse President Barack Obama for reelection.? VMFP's endorsement is recognition of both President Obama's outstanding achievements as Commander-in-Chief and his support of veteran, active duty, guard, reserve, and military family issues over the past four years.

VMFP is a national, non-partisan, not-for-profit veterans' 21st Century organization committed to addressing the critical "coming home" issues of our veterans and military families.

As the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts come to a close, the President's commitment to our veterans of all generations has endured. Over the past four years, President Obama has kept faith with, in the words of President Lincoln, those "who have borne the battle and for his widow and orphan." ?President Obama has upheld our sacred trust with America's veterans, wounded warriors and their families.

From the first day he took office, Mr. Obama has made addressing the needs of all veterans and military families a top priority and has committed to ensuring they receive the job security, health care, and education they have earned.

President Obama's Returning Heroes Tax Credit and the Wounded Warriors Tax Credit

Proposals are helping put veterans and our wounded warriors back to work today. To ensure that veterans and their families receive high-quality health care, the President signed legislation that ensures that funding for veterans' medical care is allocated a full year in advance so the VA can count on predictable and sufficient resources for treating our veterans.? Also, his administration has hired more than 3,500 mental health professionals since 2009.

As a Senator, Mr. Obama pushed for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and as President, he has ensured its successful implementation.

VMFP's primary mission is to support Veterans and Military Families in dealing with the inevitable crucial physical and mental health, employment, education and "coming home" issues. For the past four years President Obama has stood tall in leading the country to fulfill the nation's moral obligation to those who have served and sacrificed.

Hurricane Sandy begins battering the East Coast

NEW YORK/REHOBOTH BEACH, Delaware (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy, one of the biggest storms ever to hit the United States, battered the densely populated East Coast on Monday, shutting down transportation, forcing evacuations in flood-prone areas and interrupting the presidential election campaign.

Fierce winds and flooding were expected along hundreds of miles of Atlantic coast and heavy snows were forecast farther inland at higher elevations when the center of the storm moves ashore Monday evening near Atlantic City, New Jersey.

U.S. stock markets were closed for the first time since the attacks of September 11, 2001, and will remain shut on Tuesday. The government in Washington was closed and school was canceled up and down the East Coast.

Nearly 700,000 customers were without power by midday and millions more could lose electricity. One disaster forecasting company predicted economic losses could ultimately reach $20 billion, only half of it insured.

"This is going to be a big and powerful storm and all across the Eastern Seaboard I think everybody is taking the appropriate preparations," President Barack Obama said at the White House.

State governors from Virginia to Massachusetts warned of the acute danger from the storm for the 60 million residents in its path. Ten states have declared a state of emergency.

"There will undoubtedly be some deaths that are caused by the intensity of this storm, by the floods, by the tidal surge, by the waves. The more responsibly citizens act, the fewer people will die," Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley told reporters.

Forecasters said Sandy could be the largest storm to hit the mainland in U.S. history.

Off North Carolina, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 14 of the 16 crew members who abandoned the replica tall ship HMS Bounty, using helicopters to lift them from life rafts. The Coast Guard continued to search for two missing crew members.

In New York, a crane atop a building on 57th Street in Manhattan had partially collapsed, leaving it dangling high above the street. Police said they were closing the area to pedestrians.

GAINING SPEED

The storm interrupted the presidential campaign with eight days to go before the election.

Obama canceled a campaign event in Florida on Monday so he could return to Washington and monitor the government response to the storm. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney canceled stops Monday night and Tuesday.

Sandy picked up speed as it raced northwest toward the U.S. coast at 28 miles per hour (45 km per hour) on Monday afternoon, with top sustained winds at 90 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

At 2 p.m. (1800 GMT) the center of the storm was about 110 miles southeast of Atlantic City, New Jersey, or 175 miles south-southeast of New York City. Hurricane-force winds were already being recorded on the New Jersey coast.

"The center of Sandy is expected to make landfall along or just south of the southern New Jersey coast by early evening," NHC forecasters said, adding they expected little change in strength before then.

Forecasters said Sandy was a rare, hybrid "super storm" created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm.

?

The combination of those two storms would have been bad enough, but meteorologists said there was a third storm at play - a system coming down from Canada that would effectively trap the hurricane-nor'easter combo and hold it in place.

Moreover, the storm was coming ashore at high tide, which was pulled even higher by a full moon.

While Sandy does not pack the punch of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005, it has been gathering strength. It killed 66 people in the Caribbean last week before pounding U.S. coastal areas as it moved north.

'SOMETHING LIKE KATRINA'

In Fairfield, a Connecticut coastal town and major commuter point into Manhattan, police cruisers blocked the main road leading to the beaches and yellow police tape cordoned off side entrances. Beach pavilions were boarded up with plywood, and gusts of wind rocked parked cars.

"People are definitely not taking this seriously enough," police officer Tiffany Barrett, 38, said. "Our worst fear is something like Katrina and we can't get to people."

Further south, several feet of water flooded streets in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Police knocked on doors, reminding people there was a mandatory evacuation. While the police took names, they allowed residents to stay at their own risk.

Besides rain, the storms could cause up to 3 feet (1 meter) of snowfall in the Appalachian Mountains from West Virginia to Kentucky. Some people in that part of the country did not have to go to work because of the storm and used the time to vote.

At the Berkeley County Courthouse in Martinsburg, West Virginia, early voting for the November 6 elections was going ahead despite the bad weather, with some 600 people casting ballots by about 1:45 p.m. (1745 GMT)

"More (people) came out today than what I anticipated but a lot of people are off work," Bonnie Woodfall, chief deputy for voter registration, said after fielding a flurry of calls about whether the polls should stay open. "It's neat."

'RECORD-SIZED OUTAGES'

New York and other cities closed their transit systems and schools, ordering mass evacuations from low-lying areas ahead of a storm surge that could reach as high as 11 feet.

By early Monday, water was already topping the seawall in Manhattan's Battery Park City, one of the areas ordered evacuated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

He ordered 375,000 New Yorkers to evacuate and told those who remained to leave immediately. "Conditions are deteriorating rapidly and the window for you getting out safely is closing."

New York electric utility Con Edison said it expected "record-size outages," with nearly 35,000 customers in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn likely to be impacted. The company is facing both falling trees knocking down power lines from above and flood waters swamping underground systems from below.

All U.S. stock markets were closed on Monday and will remain shut on Tuesday, with a plan to re-open on Wednesday that depends on conditions after the storm passes.

The United Nations, Broadway theaters and New Jersey casinos were forced to close and more than two-thirds of East Coast oil refining capacity was in the process of shutting down.

Airlines canceled flights, bridges and tunnels closed, and national passenger rail operator Amtrak suspended nearly all service on the East Coast. The U.S. government told non-emergency workers in Washington, D.C., to stay home.

Up and down the coast, worried residents in the hurricane's path packed stores, searching for generators, flashlights, batteries, food and other emergency supplies.

Johnny Lopez, an owner of Best Buy Wines and Liquors in Brooklyn, said he plans - "God help us!" - to stay open all day on Monday and Tuesday.

"Crazy busy yesterday," he said. "It was like Thanksgiving."

Car bomb hits Damascus on last day of failed truce

EDITOR'S NOTE: Picture released by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency.

AMMAN, Jordan -- Syrian jets bombed suburbs of Damascus and a car bomb killed 10 people in the capital on Monday, the last day of a four-day truce that U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon acknowledged had failed.

Each side blamed the other for breaching the Eid al-Adha truce arranged by international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who nevertheless promised to pursue his peace efforts.

"I am deeply disappointed that the parties failed to respect the call to suspend fighting," Ban said in Seoul, where he was visiting to receive the Seoul Peace Prize.

"This crisis cannot be solved with more weapons and bloodshed ... the guns must fall silent," he said.

Brahimi, after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, voiced regret that the cease-fire had not worked better. Asked whether U.N. peacekeepers might be sent to Syria, he said there was no immediate plan for that.

Watchdog: 420 people killed since Friday
Although President Bashar Assad's government and several rebel groups accepted the plan to stop shooting over the Muslim religious holiday, it failed to stem the bloodshed in a 19-month-old conflict that has already cost at least 32,000 lives.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition watchdog, 420 people have been killed since Friday.

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

Damascus residents reported heavy air raids on the suburbs of Qaboun, Zamalka and Irbin overnight and on Monday that they said were the fiercest since jets and helicopters first bombarded pro-opposition parts of the Syrian capital in August.

Syrian state television said women and children were among those killed or wounded by a "terrorist car bomb" near a bakery in Jaramana, in the southeast of Damascus. Damascus residents say the district is controlled by Assad loyalists.

Accusations exchanged
State media said Assad's armed opponents had broken the truce throughout the Eid.

"For the fourth consecutive day, the armed terrorist groups in Deir al-Zor continued violating the declaration on suspending military operations which the armed forces have committed to," state news said, later adding that rebels had attacked government forces in Aleppo and the central city of Homs.

The Damascus air raids followed what residents said were failed attempts by troops storm eastern parts of the city.

"Tanks are deployed around Harat al-Shwam (district) but they haven't been able to go in. They tried a week ago," said an activist who lives near the area and who asked not to be named.

Government forces launched airstrikes around Damascus Saturday, flattening buildings. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

Big power conflicts
Brahimi, who will visit Beijing after Moscow, said the renewed violence in Syria would not discourage him.

"We think this civil war must end ... and the new Syria has to be built by all its sons," he said. "The support of Russia and other members of the Security Council is indispensable."

Russia and China have vetoed three Western-backed U.N. draft resolutions condemning Assad's government for the violence.

Beijing has been keen to show it does not take sides in Syria and has urged the government there to talk to the opposition and take steps to meet demands for political change. It has said a transitional government should be formed.

Big-power rifts have paralyzed U.N. action over Syria, but Assad's political and armed opponents are also deeply divided, a problem that their Western allies say has complicated efforts to provide greater support.

"In Washington, they've only been focused on the narrow political goal of their own elections, trying to convince a war-wary public inside the U.S. that we are actually disengaging from the conflicts of the Middle East," he said.

Syrian opposition figures, including Free Syrian Army commanders, started three days of talks in Istanbul on Monday in the latest attempt to unite the disparate groups.
