Gallery Hop showcases variety of Lexington art : The Kentucky Kernel

By: Kayla Pickrell

Student and faculty artists will gather under the gallery lights Thursday for the second annual UK Gallery Hop.

Featured last spring 2011, the Gallery Hop mainly attracted the community rather than students directly, said Amelia Stevens, director of this year?s hop.

?This year, the Gallery Hop hopes to be more attractive and open to students with a variety of interactive things at the various galleries,? Stevens said.

There are five opportunities for students, faculty and the community to engage in the art offered.

The first location to visit is the Rasdall Gallery in the Student Center. This gallery will feature the Crayola crayon sculptures of Herb Williams. His sculptures have previously been featured in China, Belgium, Croatia and various other countries.

In the Tuska Center for Contemporary Art, located in the Fine Arts Building, the featured exhibit is ?The Neighborhood Series 2011.? Local businesses and the Lexington Fashion Collaborative pooled their resources to provide this exhibit, which will focus on shopping local and sustainability, according to the gallery?s website.

The Lucille Little Fine Arts Library exhibit artists? books. They include collaborative work from artists that is normally kept under lock and key. For this event, artists are allowing visitors to pick up and look through the books.

The UK Art Museum will have ?The Veil: Visible and Invisible Spaces? on display, which uses interactive photography and visuals to provide commentary.

??The Veil? is a visual response to the many cultural and political aspects of veils and veiling throughout human history,? the Art Museum?s website said.

The Cats Den will feature more than one exhibit.? The first, ?Graphic Design: A Retrospective,? will include pieces from several students in the Student Center director?s office: Zach Lamb, Jesse MacLean, Russ Caldwell and event coordinator Stevens. The second exhibit features chef Scott Kohn from UK Dining Services and his food art pieces.

Although they are in separate locations, the purpose of a Gallery Hop is to visit different exhibits to see the variety in the different artists? works.

?The Gallery Hop on the University of Kentucky campus would really like to reach out to students and people in the Lexington community to raise awareness for the number of art galleries and spaces on campus, and the variety of art that Lexington has to offer,? Stevens said.? ?We hope that students, in particular, realize the sorts of cultural and artistic opportunities at this university.?

Visit any of the galleries mentioned between 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Admission is free.
